Although poker, and any card game for that matter, should always be played fairly, below I collected some of the most common methods for cheating in poke, but many of the methods can be used in blackjack, baccarat or basically any card game. Even if you do not want to do so, knowing how to cheat at poker can be useful to spot cheats at your table. If someone draws suspicion, you will know what signs to look for to determine whether that person is cheating or not.
The methods for cheating at poker fall into two general categories:
- Basic methods that do not require much skill
- Advanced sleight of hands methods that require skills, patience, years of practice and/or help of technology and practice
Cheating vs. angle shooting, definition of cheating: There are many of the techniques that are in-between cheating, and so-called angle shooting. Angle shooting (click here to see the angle shooting techniques) is a controversial subject, and the line between it, and actual cheating is blurry. However, angle shooting techniques are recognised as unethical ways for a player to gain advantage over others without actually breaking the rules of the game, while cheating definitely breaks the rules (and if you get caught the repercussions are always harsher).
Real cheating usually involves some sleight of hand at some point and it takes time and practice for someone to learn how to cheat at Poker using these methods. UPDATE: Additionally, Cheating noways often involves technology (probably the best known example of a new method of cheating in poker is RFID cards, see below).

How to cheat at live poker, and how spot someone cheating
Minimal, or no skill methods
The following cheating techniques require minimal, or no skill at all, and therefore the easiest to spot.
| 1., Shorting the pot: Shortening the pot means stealing stealing from the pot. Just simply steal rom the pot when no one is looking, and try to be as stealthy as you can. Do not attempt this in a casino or in tournament, you are guaranteed to be seen, and you will be banned for life, perhaps even the police will be involved, as this is considered stealing valuables.
How to spot the shortening of the pot: Very easy, just pay attention to the pot, whenever someone’s hands get close to it. The problem with this, is if you notice someone, they will always claim it was an ‘honest mistake’. Video of a player stealing the pot (a good example of when it is really hard to notice it): |
| 2., Peeking at other players’ cards: Simply observing other poker players’ cards while unnoticed., or if you are lucky and the dealer is not a professional (e.g. it’s game among friends) you might catch a glimpse of the top card of the deck as well. This method is not usable at all in a casinos or in poker tournaments.
How to spot peeking: Just observe your fellow players, in fact, in a professional setting you are not supposed to look at other’s people’s cards even while they are face down (which they always are in a casino or during a tournament), therefore a player that looks at other people’s cards is instantly suspicious.

I really don’t recommend using these, and other basic cheating techniques, they are not worth it. You will only get banned and perhaps even the police will be called too. If you are serious about cheating you either need to turn to technology (RFID cards) or get really good at sleight of hand techniques (card mucking).
Sleight of hand techniques, which require skill
The following techniques either require good hand eye ordination, and nerves, or some sort of technology. What they all have in common is that they require a lot of practice to master.
| 1., Hand mucking: When a cheat is “mucking” he is cleverly hiding cards in his hand, to later switch a card in his/her hand for it. Cheating at poker this way is the most effective in a team and even more so, if the cheat conspires with the dealer. This s probably the most well known form of cheating in poker. Also sometimes attempted in blackjack, but it’s more difficult (less players usually, less distractions).
How to spot hand mucking: The hand mucker needs to hide the mucked cards somewhere, and eventually switch it to one in his hand. He will use some kind of distraction. Look for these signs, if you’re suspicious. You can see some examples of what to look for in the videos below. 2., Bottom dealing (a.k.a. base dealing): It’s a sleight of hand technique in which the bottom card from a deck of playing cards is dealt instead of the top card. The use of the so-called mechanic’s grip can give away the false dealer (see below). Also, unless the dealer is particularly skilled, the technique produces a slightly different sound from standard dealing, and the second-to-bottom card may be slightly out of place. A similar technique is “second dealing” which involves dealing the second card, instead of the top one.
 Mechanic’s grip How to spot bottom dealing: Bottom dealing requires the dealer to hold the deck with the so-called mechanic’s grip (see below) when dealing.
Mechanic’s grip: The dealer grips the deck with the index finger in front of it or his pinky and pointing finger on both short sides of the deck while the other fingers support the deck while the cards are being beveled slightly. Watch out for dealers who use this grip, it’s a good sign that they are cheating. However, don’t be too fast to judge, the grip is also taught in many professional dealer schools around the world, and it’s a very comfortable way to hold a deck for long periods of time, therefore it’s not a 100% sure sign of cheating.
How to spot someone cheating at Poker this way – The mechanics grip, slightly different sound from standard dealing, and the second-to-bottom card may be slightly out of place.

| 3. Stacking the deck, stacking: A cheating dealer can place certain cards in a position favourable to himself, or his partner in crime. Stacking is more often used than bottom dealing, because it looks less suspicious (no weird sound, no mechanic’s grip, no out of place cards). You can stack the deck in any card game, where there is shuffling of the cards, and it’s definitely an effective way of cheating at any card game, and almost impossible to notice.
How to spot someone stacking the deck: If it’s done in combination with riffle shuffling, it’s impossible to spot. When overhand stacking is used, the dealer tracks certain cards through the overhand shuffling process, you might notice that, but it’s difficult. There is no good way to spot this method of cheating.

| 4., Collusion It’s a group of players, or a dealer and a player, secretly forms a team and plays in a manner to giving them an advantage over other players. They usalyl communicate with secret hand gestures, body language, or posture.
How to spot colluding players: You can spot the cheaters by looking observing the signs they use to communicate with each other: a cough, scratching one’s nose, ears, etc., the better the cheats are, the subtler the signs. | 5., Marked cards, and RFID cards: The cheat marks some cards, so he can determine what kind of hand his opponent has by looking at the back of the cards. Cheating at Poker this way is effective, but requires the previous modification of the deck and its hard to come up with such subtle signs that the other players can’t notice.
How to spot marked cards, RFID cards: Look for any idiosyncrasies on the back of the cards, indentation, discoloration, a slight bump, stickiness.

There are other methods to cheat at poker, but they are usually based on these main methods. UPDATE 2021: Lately, cheating in card games is all about using technology, hidden cameras, RFID chips, your phone etc., therefore more and more casinos and tournaments require players to turn off their phones. Not to mention, more and more people play online, and therefore, cheaters now focus more on online poker than live poker. Which brings us to:
How to cheat at online poker
Cheating at poker online has it’s own methods, which are much harder, or downright impossible to spot by the other players. The methods for cheating at poker online,can be sorted into two main categories:
- Methods that don’t require any particular, or only basic IT know-how
- Methods that require solid IT skills
Online poker cheating – basic methods
UPDATE 2021: I no longer recommend the easier methods to cheat at online poker, if you are new to these methods. In 2021, most online poker platforms don’t really tolerate them, and are very good at identifying them. You will get banned very fast if you attempt them, if you are not extra careful. You have been warned.
| 1., Collusion: It’s much the same method as its offline counterpart. You secretly partner up with another player at your table to gain advantage. Only it’s much easier to manage online, and the only way to spot cheats is to observe their play. Make sure you are both using a separate computer, and are located far away from each other (IP address, separate countries preferably, onlien poker platforms don’t like IP masks or VPNs), and you don’t always play together, and you sometimes lose as well. If you observe these precautions, by the time you will be banned, you probably have made quite a lot of money.
How to spot collusion online: You can’t really, their behavior, complementary tactics might give them away, or that they always play together, join almost simultaneously etc.. The video below will give you some great ideas on what to look for. If you suspect someone, report them, the platform will investigate it, that’s the best you can do. But even if they will be banned, you won’t get your money back.

| 2., Multiple accounts: It’s the same as above, a simple method of creating multiple accounts on the same site (using virtual machines, and VPNs, some poker platforms don’t have issues with VPN, usually the smaller poker platforms) and playing with them at the same tables, basically collusion with yourself. If you set it up properly, it’s very hard to spot, very hard to get caught.
UPDATE: However, Darren Woods, a World Series of Poker bracelet winner in 2011, has been sentenced to 15 months in jail (and a huge fine) recently, for cheating at online poker this way. His scam was uncovered by diligent members of the poker community, who, after analysing his play, determined, that his win-rate was too high to be legitimate. | 3., Ghosting – Ghosting is exploiting poker live streamers. A streamer who livestreams playing poker online is exposing his hole cards to his viewers. This is somewhere between angle shooting and actual cheating. If a streamer streams himself playing poker online it’s equivalent of showing your hole cards to your opponents in a poker game. Because it’s a publicly accessible livestream, from a legal point of view, the ghost commits no crime. However, if you get caught, by the platform (only happens if someone reports you) you will still get banned, keep that in mind.
Another version of ghosting is ‘coaching’, when the player has a ‘coach’, and advisor who helps him choose the best tactics while playing. It is a practice forbidden in live tournaments, but it’s downright impossible to enforce online. Cheating at poker this way gives a serious advantage to the player. It’s also completely impossible to spot for other players.
How to spot ghosting in online poker: You can’t really, with a 100% certainty. Butt if your opponent is too good, and seems to “read your mind”, you might get suspicious. It’s best to just livestream with a good 5-10 minutes delay, or just don’t live stream open, public online poker matches. At any case, if you suspect that ghosting happened too you, report that player, that’s the best you can do.

Cheating at Poker online with IT skills
The following techniques of cheating in online poker require extensive and specific IT skills.
| 1., Poker bots: A poker bot uses a combination of carefully crafted algorithms to play in a way that is profitable on the long run, and better than most human payers. Needless to say, these bots are not sold openly (it’s illegal). A bot cheater would probably need to code one himself or acquire one somehow from other hackers, other cheaters using bots. There are some bots that are sold openly (Warbot), but none of them can be used for cheating with real money, without some tinkering. But even if you acquired the necessary bots, you still need to set up virtual machines, advanced VPNs, and the bot network in a way that the platform won’t notice, which is no small task nowadays. If you get caught, you will be banned. Therefore, cheating at poker this way definitely requires specific skills. Sadly, bots are more and more common, even on the biggest and most secure online platforms, because a well programmed bot network is virtually undetectable.
How to spot online poker bots: If they are programmed very good, you can’t. Even the poker platforms have serious difficulty in catching bot networks.

| 2., Hacking, viewing hole cards: In 2006, a scandal, the first big poker hacking scandal, which involved Absolute Poker, hit the news. A player got access to a super-user-account, and was able to see the cards of his opponents, and made a lot of money this way. There is obviously no standard method to hack poker sites, but hackers and malicious employees still exist, and the average player has no means to defend himself against them. Usually, people who use bot networks are the ones who also exploit the security vulnerabilities of poker platforms (that’s what we call hacking), the same group of hackers. but not always.
How to spot hacking in online poker: You can’t, and depending on the hack it might be you who gets into trouble, eg.: someone hacked your account, while you were sleeping, it was controlled by a bot, next time you try to log in, turns out you are banned. The only thing you can do is to have a really secure password, have antivirus software on your computer, only access the poker platform from one device, and use only safe payment methods (with SMS, mobile verification, so even if you get hacked, they won’t be able to make financial transactions).
