The picture depicts a Roulette wheel. However, this is not just an ordinary Roulette wheel. Apart from being a functional gambling device, this is also a prop for a drinking game. There are black and red numbered shoot glasses around the Roulette wheel. After spinning the Roulette wheel participants must drink from the corresponding shot glass. Under the picture you can see different roulette games, which you can play for free. Click on any of the different types to start winning money.

Online Roulette Tables -- Free to Play

You can play the following roulette for free on this website (no registration and no download required):

+Roulette tutorial section for people who don’t know how to play roulette (tutorial, bets explained, strategy and terminology with helpful visual aids and tutorial video).

The online Roulette tables automatically change size to fit your screen resolution, they are all mobile compatible (let me know in the comments section if they are not). Compatible with most devices and browsers. Java and flash are required.

You need to enable Javascript and Flash on your browser to play the games. (Here is a tutorial on how to do it: Javascript, Flash)
Also, try disabling adblocker plugins, they often cause issues. Also, try a different browser other than Google Chrome if you experience issues, Chrome often identifies the slots as a threat and blocks them from playing properly, or at all.

The most important thing to pay attention to with different types of roulette is the so called RTP (Return To Player). It tells you how much you can win if you play long term at that table. RTP is always under 100%, the closer the value it is to 100% the better. When it comes to RTP European Roulette and roulette types based on the European table are hands down the best. French Roulette a variant of European Roulette has by far the best RTP, but only if you place even-money bets only (see below for a detailed explanation) and American Roulette has the worst RTP.

UPDATE: New live roulette tables were added! That’s right, you can experience live roulette with real-time live croupiers without having to register and deposit at an online casino. If you always wanted to take a peek and see what the fuss is all about this online gambling trend you can now do so (they are at the bottom of the list below).

If you would like to try out Roulette with real money you can do so at the following online casinos:

European Roulette

On the picture is part of Roulette wheel. The words "European Roulette" can be seen on the picture as well. The picture acts as a link. By clicking on the picture you will be take to a webpage, where you can play European Roulette online.

European Roulette

Type: European Roulette
Software: Microgaming -- Switch Studios
RTP: 97,3%
Number of zeros: 1
Number of wheels: 1
Release date:  March 2019

European Roulette description, rules -- European Roulette is the standard form of Roulette (except in the USA) and the first one to be invented. It was actually invented in France, that’s where the word comes from (roulette means little wheel in French). This version has just the one zero and offers no bonuses or extra features for any of the numbers. It is the classic version of roulette and has an RTP of 97,3%. This is Microgaming’s partner Switch Studio’s take on this classic, it’ a 3D HD roulette, IMO the best version currently out there.

Click on the picture or here to play European Roulette.

French Roulette

A picture with a Roulette wheel. On the top of the Roulette wheel you can read the words "French Roulette". The picture acts as a link. By clicking on the picture you will be taken to a webpage, where you can play French Roulette online.

French Roulette

Type: French Roulette (European Roulette with La Partage)
Software: Net Entertainment
RTP: 98,65% (for even-money bets), 97,3% (non-even money bets)*
Number of zeros: 1
Number of wheels: 1
Release date:  January 2014

French Roulette description, rules -- Played on the same Roulette table as European Roulette, except there is a twist if the ball lands on zero.

French Roulette includes the La Partage rule (losing only half your money in case of a 0 if you had made an even-money bet*: Red/Black, Even/Odd, Manque/Passe). In some other versions of French Roulette instead of La Partage half of the stakes on even money bets will be ‘En Prison’ (in prison) if the ball lands on zero. An optional rule applied to even-money wagers only. When the outcome is zero, your bet will be en prison for a subsequent spin instead of just losing your bet. If you win during next spin you get your full bet back but no winnings, but if you lose, you lose the bet. La Partage is superior to En Prison and raises RTP significantly more.

*Half the stakes are always returned to the players in case the ball lands on zero (called La Partage) in case of even-money bets. The house edge for this version of Roulette is 1.35% as long as even-money bets are being played, which you should stick to (even money bets are: Red/Black, Odd/Even, Hi/Lo, sometimes written as Manque/Passe or 1-18/19-36). If non-even money bets are being made the house edge will revert back to that of regular European Roulette (2.7%). If a combination of even-money and non even-money bets are made, the long term house edge will be between 1,35% and 2,7%, depending.

American Roulette

On the picture is a Roulette table (with two zeros, this the Roulette table used for American Roulette). The US flag can be seen in the background. The words "American Roulette" can be seen over the Roulette table on the picture. The picture acts as a link. By clicking on the picture you will be take to a webpage, where you can play American Roulette online.

American Roulette

Type: American Roulette
Software: Microgaming -- Switch Studios
RTP: 94,74% (worst house edge of any roulette type, not recommended)
Number of zeros: 2
Number of wheels: 1
Release date:  November 2018

American Roulette description, rules -- American Roulette is the standard form of Roulette in the USA (not in Canada, they use the European one) this wheel has two zeroes and 36 numbers this lowers the RTP to to 94,74%.

Zeros on Roulette are ‘green’ -- neither red or black -- and zero is also not considered odd or even, altough mathematically speaking zero is an even number.  Therefore, having two zeros on the wheel significantly reduces your chances while betting on colour or parity, so called even-money wagers.

Monopoly Roulette

Type: European Roulette
Software: SG Interactive
House edge: 5.3% -- 4.53%
Number of zeros: 1
Number of wheels: 1

This is a unique specialty It’s basically a European roulette but with a monopoly-themed skin.

Live Roulette by Netent

Live Roulette

Live Roulette

Type: European Roulette
Software: Net Entertainment
RTP: 97,3%
Number of zeros: 1
Number of wheels: 1
Release date:  November 2019

Live Roulette description, rules --  This is Net Ent’s live roulette app, there are many different types of roulette in this app, not just the classic European. Auto Roulette (automatic machine, without a croupier), Quick Spin Automatic Roulette (faster), VIP High Roller Roulette (with really high bets), Italian-, French-, German speaking roulette tables etc…, all of them can be played from this single app (don’t worry, no download necessary). They come up with new stuff all the time. However, all of them are European roulette, so the rules are the same, payouts, bets RTP etc..If you know how to play European Roulette, then you are all set. It’s worth checking out at least once, after all this is the latest breakthrough to happen in online gambling. I personally don’t like it, I like it when there is no croupier and I’m not timed on my bets while playing online so this not for me, but maybe you like the human touch, worth checking out, it’s free after all.

Roulette tutorial video

If you are totally new to roulette and don’t even understand the basics please watch the roulette tutorial video below before you continue to the types of bets, otherwise you won’t understand them.

How To Play Roulette

Also we make constant references to even-money bets in the section below, let’s clarify first what even-money bets are. Even-money bets means the chance you lose or win is almost 50% (e.g.: betting on colour black or red that would be 50%, but roulette has at least one zero, which neither, it’s green, so it’s only 49,325% -- that’s an even-money bet in roulette).

Even-money bets: Red/Black, Even/Odd, 1-18,19-36 and not-even money bets are everything else, some types of bets are combination of both, see below for details.

Also important is RTP (Return To Player). It tells you how much you can win if you play long term at that table. RTP is always under 100%, the closer the value it is to 100% the better. The higher the RTP, the better it is for the player, and worse for the casino, the higher it is the more you can win long term and the less you will lose.

Types of online roulette

Multi wheel roulette --  Multiple wheels but one table, bet on multiple different wheels at the same time, a roulette trend from around 2008 give or take, it was very trendy to create multi-wheeled variants of existing roulette types, it has since all but disappeared from online casinos, no new multi-wheel roulette game has been published in the last few years

Themed roulette -- Like the Monopoly Roulette above, basically European roulette with a new themed skin and perhaps some special rules, gimmicks (e.g.: Pinball Roulette)

Live roulette -- A fashion trend in the gambling industry currently, a croupier (usually young, sexually attractive females, casinos are well aware that as much as 70% of their player base is male) spin the roulette wheels in a room and that is filmed and broadcasted live (they don’t place your bets on the table, just spin the roulette wheel and announce things), it’s just a fad IMO, but currently every major casino has live roulette, the croupier always looks tired and bored an announce the numbers in a monotonous robotic voice, I really don’t enjoy it, I don’t see the appeal but it’s being pushed really hard by the online casinos right now

Auto roulette -- It’s just like the live roulette, except there is no croupier so you are watching on a livecam an automated roulette wheel spin, the advantage of it is that it spins really fast and provides a much faster game than with a croupier

VIP/high roller roulette -- the bets are higher, the max allowed bet is much higher

European roulette -- the classic version with one zero

American roulette -- two zeros, and one special

Mini roulette -- A version of roulette available at some online casinos. In this game, there is a smaller wheel that features only 13 numbers (0-12), and payouts are adjusted accordingly. In addition, many mini roulette games return half of all losses when a spin results in a zero (En Prison rule, see above), which makes the house edge similar to the advantage the casino holds in traditional roulette games.

Types of bets in roulette,  terminology

This is an American roulette table with annotations. This shows the place of various bet types and the name of these and the payout. If the iamge is not dispalyed correctly or you are visually impaired you can read these types of bets and their payouts right under the picture.

Tutorial on the types of bets in roulette -- illustrated with an American roulette table

Although roulette is a fairly simple game to play, there are dozens of different terms that are used in roulette (some of them French) that you may not be familiar with. These roulette terms appear again and again in writings about roulette, and you’ll also hear many of them when you’re at the roulette table.

The following list features some of the most common (and most important) roulette terms that you’ll want to know before playing. Don’t worry knowing this is not a requirement to play or enjoy roulette, so, if you are not interested you can skip this part and start playing right away.

Types of bets in roulette:

  • Bet on the Layout: A wager placed anywhere on the numbers portion of the table.
  • Biased Wheel: A roulette wheel on which not all numbers are equally likely to win on a given spin. Many stories of players scoring large wins in roulette are the result of exploiting biased wheels and betting on the numbers most likely to win. (refers to brick & mortar casinos, there is no wheel bias in online roulette)
  • Croupier: The equivalent of a dealer, the casino employee who oversees the roulette table. Sometimes called a host/hostess outside of Europe.
  • Block Betting: To bet on a set of numbers on one section of the wheel, used in certain roulette strategies. (debunked, not helping)
  • Call Bets: Call bets are wagers made by speaking the bet aloud without placing any chips on the table. Many casinos do not allow true call bets but do allow announced bets, where a player calls out a bet and then immediately places the chips on the table to cover that bet.
  • Re-bet: In online roulette many of the pass have this feature, instead of having to place the same bets again, you can just simply click a button and it places your previous bet automatically.
  • Carr: Carr means corner in French. A corner bet is when you place a single chip on 4 numbers by placing it at the corner of the numbers.
  • Cheval: A split bet, placing one casino chip between two numbers thereby placing a bet on both numbers.
  • Colonne: French term, means a column, it’s betting on a column, a column bet.
  • Column Bet: A bet on one of the three available columns of numbers. Pays 2 to 1.
  • Croupier: The casino employee who oversees the play at the roulette table. This employee may also be referred to as a dealer, but croupier is the more formal and accurate term.
  • Double Zero: The space on a roulette wheel marked “00” that can only be found on American roulette wheels. These wheels are also known as “double zero” wheels accordingly.
  • Dozen Bet: A bet on one of the three available groups of 12 numbers; 1 through 12, 13 through 24, or 25 through 36. Pays 2 to 1.
  • En Plein: Means a plain, a plain bet. Called a straight up bet in English, a single bet on a single number.
  • En Prison: Literally, in prison. An optional rule applied to even-money wagers* only. When the outcome is zero, your bet will be en prison (in prison) for a subsequent spin instead of just losing your bet. If you win during next spin you get your full bet back but no winnings, but if you lose, you lose the bet. Example: So if you bet $10 on even, but a zero comes, you will be put in prison, next an even number comes you get your $10 back and no more. However, if an odd number was spun instead you lose your bet. Somewhat increases RTP for even-money wagers
  • La Partage: Again, an optional roulette rule very similar to the En Prison. If you place an even-money bet and zero is spun your bet will be divided in half instead of losing it all. This really helps players and pushes the RTP up, from 97,3% to 98,65% for even money bets. This is better than En Prison.
  • House Edge: The mathematical advantage the casino holds over the player, expressed as the percentage of each bet the casino expects to keep on average in the long run. On a single zero roulette wheel, the house edge is 2.70%. Similar to RTP, RTP= house edge -100%. So 97% RTP mean 3% house edge. One is player oriented (RTP) focusing on how much you can win long term and other is casino focused (house edge) telling the casino how much they can make on you long term, but they all calculate the same thing.
  • Marker: The device used by the croupier to mark the winning number after each spin. Players should not place new bets for the upcoming spin until the croupier has removed the marker from the table.
  • Pockets: The areas on the roulette wheel in which the roulette ball might land. Each pocket has a unique number, ranging from 1-36, and there is also a 0 pocket (and a 00 pocket on an American roulette wheel). Half of the numbered pockets are colored red, while half are black, and zeros are colored green.
  • Six Line: A bet made that covers two adjacent rows of numbers on the roulette layout, covering six numbers in all. This bet traditionally pays out at 5-1 odds.
  • Split: A bet made which covers two adjacent numbers on the roulette layout, made by placing chips on the intersection of two numbers. This bet traditionally pays out at odds of 17-1.
  • Straight Up: A bet made on a single number, made by placing chips on that number on the table layout. This bet traditionally pays out at odds of 35:1.
  • Street: A bet made on a row of three numbers on the roulette table layout, made by placing chips on the edge of that row. This bet traditionally pays 11-1 odds.
  • Transversale: French term meaning a Street bet.
  • Sixainne: French for 6 line bet
  • Inside Bets: All of these are considered inside (the inside section of the layout of the table) bets: straight up, split bet, street bet, line bet, square\corner bet, basket bet (a.k.a. five bet, two zeroes+numbers 1,2,3) -- 6:1
  • Outside bets: All of these are considered outside (the inside section of the layout of the table) bets: Column Bet, Dozen bet, Red/Black, Even/Odd, 1-18,19-36, 1-12, 12-24, 24-36

This is a picture illustrating the positions of various french bets on a single zero, European Roulette wheel.

The place of French bets on a European roulette wheel.

French Bets: These bets cover certain physical sections of the roulette wheel. They are popular in European casinos, particularly among high rollers. A player making a French bet is actually making several bets at once to cover all of the numbers in each wheel section.

  • Orphelins: Orphans. Betting on the numbers 9,13,14,20,17,34,6.
  • Le Tiers Du Cylindre: The third of the wheel. Betting on the numbers 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33.
  • Voisins du Zero: Neighbours of Zero. The largest and consequently most expensive French bet includes: 0, 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25
  • Jeu Zéro: Game Zero. A smaller version of Voisins du Zero, only includes: 0, 32, 15, 12, 35, 3, 26

There is a lot of misinformation about working, winning roulette strategies, so called roulette systems. There aren’t any! Don’t get scammed, especially if people ask for money to tell you their secret “guaranteed to win roulette strategy”, there is no such thing. If you want to maximize your chances of winning play French Roulette (European Roulette with La Partage) with even-money bets only and that’s it, as far as online casino are considered.
However, there is one thing you can do to hack the system, but that only works in brick&mortar casinos, it’s called wheel bias, and you can read about it here, but it doesn’t work online and it only works with old roulette wheels (also you will banned from the casino if discovered).

It’s not possible to win free spins in roulette. However, some casinos occasionally offer free spins (also called free games, same thing) as part of a promotion, check out the offers on this page, if you are interested.

Which is the best bet in roulette?

All bets in roulette have the same RTP, except European roulette with the La Partage optional rule (also called French Roulette) in that case even-money bets are the way to go, they have 98,65%  RTP instead of the 97,3% RTP. Other than that it’s up to you.
The highest payout is with a single straight up bet (bet on single number) that pays 35:1,  35x your bet.

Is roulettes grammatically correct?

No. Roulette is both plural and singular, say roulette tables instead, or roulette wheels etc., depending on what you want to say.

Do I need to use the French words while playing roulette? I don't speak French!

It’s considered good manners to try, at least here in Europe, they are really easy to pronounce too (at least compared to other French words…). But if you can’t and if you are not comfortable with them, just don’t, croupiers always understand the English names for the bets and usually use the English names as well (or at least they should), you don’t even have to know them, just put the chips on the table. They will correct it if you do something wrong. If you are an absolute roulette beginner just copy what someone else is doing at the table, roulette is a pretty easy to understand game, don’t be afraid of it.
