However, said line seems to be blurry and the difference is likely only a matter of degree. It depends on the location, situation, the dealer, the players you play with. In short: angle shooting is a skill like any other, you have to have a ‘feel’ for it, otherwise you will quickly end up being branded as a cheater (which is devastating if you area professional). And the only way to develop that intuitive understanding required to analyze the situation and quickly make decisions (required to successfully angle shoot) only come with practice.

Angle shooting in poker is controversial to say the least (but can be very entertaining to watch, as a spectator). This can get you banned, and can ruin your reputation, if you don’t know where the line is.
Let’s look at the different techniques used in poker to better understand angle shooting. Each example comes with a video showing you that specific angle shooting technique in action. Hopefully, this guide and list, and the video examples, will set you on the right track, but real life practice is necessary. Don’t expect to become an angle shooting expert just by reading guides and watching videos.
List of angle shooting techniques used in the world of professional poker
| 1., All-in without looking, or the “I haven’t looked at my hand, I swear”: If someone goes all-in without looking, do not ever believe them. They always look. Don’t be fooled.
On the video below you can see a few methods how people cheat and look at their hands, then lie to everyone around them. This will help you spot them: |
| 2., Berating your opponent, a.k.a. “being a dick”: You have to be careful with this one, because you are never allowed to insult your fellow players. Even excessive rudeness is enough to get you banned. However, lightly, not too strongly berating your opponents is allowed. This can confuse them, and make them uncomfortable, raising their stress levels, which will inevitably lead to them making mistakes more frequently.

| 3., Acting out of turn, fake hand: There are many different variations of this. One example could be, if out of turn, a player declares they just hit a great hand, and then the opponent would muck their own hand in desperation. But in reality it’s all a ruse and the cheater had a great hand all along. This is definitely illegal in tournaments.
However, acting out of turn to confuse other players, using time extension, like on the video below, can confuse your opponents and make them fold: |
| 4., Acting, faking, a.k.a “hollywooding”: You’re allowed to mislead and dupe your opponents by acting. It’s only called “hollywooding” when it’s really over the top and you can tell it’s acting.

| 5., Hiding big denomination chips. Sometimes it’s not intentional, sometimes it is, it’s really hard to tell. Can you tell?
Here is a video of a pro player who hid his chips. Was it intentional, or was he playing an angle? I honestly don’t know: |
| 6., The incomplete call, false raise: You are raising by 100. However, the angle shooter only puts in a slightly lower amount, you don1T notice it, nobody does, and he is silent as the grave. You assume he called, and you show your cards. If you won, the angle shooter will point out that his bet wasn’t actually completed, so he didn’t really call. Of course, if he won, you would of course never know anything untoward has happened, as the angle shooter will collect the pot directly.
Another version of this can be used in casinos where the rules allow for doubling of the bet without verbal declaration. The bet is small, but angle shooter puts forth a bunch of chips, you assume he doubled, you have a bad hand and you fold. But when the bet is actually counted, it turns out he didn’t. He lies, and says it was an accident and he only put forth more chips by mistake. You lose. Yet another way is when an angle shooter cuts out calling or raising chips, but only slyly pushes his chips from side to side, but not forward, because it’s binding in most casinos. This way the cheater can gauge the reaction of other players, and act accordingly. On the video below, at 21:49, you can see a good example of this: |
| 7., Ambiguous gesture, ambiguous check: This happens when someone makes a move that can be interpreted as a check, but it’s an intentionally misleading hand gesture, such as a wave of the hand. They can do this to see what everyone else has been planning to do, and after everyone else checks, they may announce that they want to raise after all, and pretend that their gesture was misunderstood. Sometimes this can happen by accident too.

| 8., The “I don’t speak English”: If you are not a native English speaker, you might get away with much more, if you know how to paly your cards right (pun intended). You can use any of the angle shooting techniques outlined on this page, and just add the magic line “I don’t speak English very well”, with a heavy accent, if you get caught. It might get you out of a sticky situation. But it doesn’t always work.

Angle shooting is not restricted to brick & mortar gambling. Angle shooting is possible online as well.
UPDATE 2021: I no longer recommend angle shooting in online poker, most online poker platforms in 2021 don’t really tolerate them, and are very good at identifying them. You will get banned very fast if you attempt them.
| 1., Going south: A player leaves a ring game, right after winning big. He returns immediately afterwards ,with minimum stack. Many online poker rooms have rules against this kind of behaviour, but not all of them.

| 2., Ghosting: A streamer who livestreams playing poker online is exposing his hole cards to his viewers. A viewer can join that same game. Said player, the “ghost, will be able to see his hole cards and easily beat the streamer. This is untraceable, and even today, there is no risk of getting caught by the platform.
Another version of ghosting is ‘coaching’, when the player has a ‘coach’, and advisor who helps him choose the best tactics while playing. It is a practice forbidden in live tournaments, but it’s downright impossible to enforce online. Cheating at poker this way gives a serious advantage to the player. It’s also completely impossible to spot for other players. Below is an example of ghosting, it’s a a recording from a Twitch livestream: |
| 3., Disconnection protection abuse: Temporary disconnection issues are a huge headache for most online casinos, and online poker platforms. Therefore, online poker sites introduced the so called “disconnection protection”. If you have money in the pot, and you get disconnected, you will stay in the hand as if the amount you added was going all-in. The hand will stand, until the showdown, regardless of whether others raise. The angle shooters abuse this by disconnecting on purpose, so their current bet can ride until the showdown. Many online casinos and poker sites have outlawed this kind of behavior and have strict rules to discourage this sort of activity. They can ban you from the online casino and you will lose all your winnings.

Using software to analyse one’s own history is generally accepted, and actually it is a powerful tool to help you get better at poker, most professional use them. However, acquiring histories of other players online is sort of a grey area, and can be considered a kind of “digital angle shooting”. If you build a profile of an opponent, the app will basically tell you your opponents likely move, to a high degree of accuracy, a powerful advantage.

Seating scripts and various other table selection apps, plugins aren’t always prohibited (check with your platform first, some don1t like them), even though they provide a very real (but small) advantage compared to those who don’t use it.

As a spectator I absolutely love watching angle shooters, especially if they get caught and get banned. But, as player, I hate it when my opponents use it. At the end of the day most people who angle shoot, do it, because they are just not good enough, so, as they say it nowadays: git gud.
