1867: Gambling is officially outlawed by the The Public Gambling Act of 1867.
Originally it was a law regulating gambling in India, it was adopted by Bangladesh, and it bans all forms of gambling apart from lotteries and wagering on horses.
1971: The independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan.
1971 – nowadays: Bangladesh did not inherit the gambling laws of Pakistan, which means the Bangladeshi gambling laws are unchanged since 1867.
A few forms of gambling are legal in Bangladesh since 1867, despite the fact that 91% of the population are adherents of Islam.
The following types of games of chance are legal in Bangladesh:
- lottery;
- horse racing betting (similarly to other Muslim countries, e.g.: Pakistan , the United Arab Emirates);
- “games of pure skill” (however, it is not clarified, it is unknown what kind of games fall into this category).
UPDATE 2023: Previously the guide erroneously stated that gambling was illegal, which is technically true, officially, games of chance are outlawed according to the The Public Gambling Act1.
However, horse racing wagering and certain forms of lottery are legal in the country, because they are not considered gambling.

Be aware that most gambling blogs still to this day erroneously claim that all forms of gambling are illegal in Bangladesh, but this is incorrect.
Online gambling is officially illegal in Bangladesh.
However, the interment gambling ban does not seem to be enforced. No Bangladeshi players were ever prosecuted for placing bets online, according to Faijul Islam from Chittagong University Law Department2.
