2014: Lesotho Sun Hotel & Casino closed. It later reopened as Avani Lesotho Hotel & Casino (on the picture at the top of the page).

Gambling is legal in Lesotho since 1975, the current main piece of the gambling legislation is the 1989 Casino Order1.

The Casino Board is responsible for the licensing and regulation of all forms of gambling activities (details can be found below at the Lesotho gambling licensing section).

, and according to section 36 “Regulations”:

“Without prejudice to the generally of sub-section (1), the Minister may make regulations.
a) Prescribing any fees, gaming levy, taxes and other payments payable under section 20;…”.

 

This means that the gambling tax payable is determined on a case-by-case basis, and each casino pays a different fixed fee and/or performance-based tax rate, based on their unique deal with the government.
