Nauru gambling guide

Nauru, officially the Republic of Nauru and (formerly known as Pleasant Island) is located in Micronesia in the Central Pacific. Its nearest neighbour is Bana Island in Kiribati 300 kilometres to the east. Nauru is the smallest state in the South Pacific and third smallest in the world, only the Vatican City and Monaco are smaller. Nauru has roughly 10,000 residents. The dominant religion is Christianity, but the Nauruan constitution guarantees freedom of religion. An interesting fact, Nauruans were the most obese people in the world till 2013, 71% of the population was overweight in 2012.

Nauru was claimed by the German Empire in the late 19th century as a colony. After World War I the country became a League of Nations mandate administered by Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. During World War II, Nauru was occupied by Japanese troops until the allied forces advanced through the Pacific. When the war ended, Nauru entered the UN trusteeship (the successor of the League of Nations which ceased to exist in 1946) and finally gained its independence in 1968. Since then, it is operated as a democratic parliamentary republic. Nauru’s current president is Baron Waqa. The country’s official languages are Nauruan and English.

Nauru enjoyed the highest per-capita income in the world during the 60s and 70s due to the country’s phosphate resources. When the phosphate reserves were exhausted, the country had to find new ways to earn money. Nauru briefly became a tax haven and illegal money laundering center. Since then, Nauru is heavily dependent on Australian aid.
