Online casinos in Nauru

Legal status: unregulated

Online casinos are not explicitly regulated in the Republic of Nauru. Nauru, formerly known as Pleasant Island, is an island country located in Ocenia, in the SouthPacific Ocean. Nauru had been a German protectorate from 1888 until it was captured by Australian troops in 1914. Nauru became independent from Australia in 1966, and is now a self-governing country with no official affiliations.

While Nauru has its own gambling laws, these laws make no mention of online casino gambling specifically. The main reason for this is most likely the country’s size: the population of Nauru is below 15 000. As a result, online casino gambling is most likely not enough of a phenomenon on the island to warrant the efforts necessary to create an online casino regulation.

Gambling, and therefore casino gambling in general is regulated in Nauru by the Gaming Act that has been in effect since 2011. In accordance with this gaming act, casino gambling is general in the country. Since online casinos are not explicitly mentioned in the regulations, it might be assumed that they are affected by the same rules as brick and mortar casinos. As a result, it might be possible in theory for an online casino to apply for a Nauruan gambling licence.

It is questionable whether the authorities of Nauru are prepared for such an occurrence. What can be said for certain, is that to date no online casino operator has attempted to obtain  a licence in the coutnry. As a result, there are no licensed online casinos on the island; and casinos without a licence are not allowed to operate on the island.

On the other hand, as online casino gambling is not explicitly banned in Nauru, locals are actually free to play on any international online casino sites available to them. Participating in unlicensed casino games carries a fine for participants as well, at least in theory, but there have been no reports of individual players prosecuted for online casino gambling. Even though these casinos are technically unlicensed, they fall outside of the jurisdiction of the Nauruan authorities. Most international online casinos welcome players from Nauru.

Land-based casinos in Nauru

While online casinos are not regulated in Nauru, brick and mortar casinos are definitely legal on the island. Casino gambling in Nauru is regulated by the Gambling Act of 2011. In accordance with this act, both gaming machines and table games are allowed, but only if the operator has obtained the appropriate licence. Casinos in Nauru must also pay the corresponding licensing fee.

Even though casino gambling is legal in Nauru, there do not appear to be any licensed casinos in operation on the island. The population of Nauru is, by itself, too low to sustain a casino; although a significant income might be generated from the licensing fee and gambling tax if a casino were to be etablished as a tourist attraction at leat.

It is not clear whether this absence of casinos in Nauru is due to a lack of investors or a deliberate decision by the local government, but the fact remains that there are no licensed and legal casinos on the island. There are certainly some unlicensed casino operations in the country, but as even participants in illicit games may be prosecuted, it is best to avoid these.

Other forms of online gambling in Nauru

Most forms of online gambling are just as unregulated in Nauru as onlin casino gambing is. While gambling in general is legal on the island, there do not seem to be many operators present in the country. Even though lottery is legal, for example, Nauru has no lottery of its own, and consequently no online lottery either.

The most popular forms of gambling in Nauru are sports betting and bingo. Bingo events are licensed on a one-off basis; and at least one Nauruan bar is known to host bingo games. There are, however, no online sports betting or online bingo operators based on the island.Despite the lack of local options, Nauruan gamblers still have access to online gambling. Most international online sports betting, online lottery and online poker sites welcome players from Nauru.
