Gambling is legal in Nicaragua (officially the República de Nicaragua, the largest country in Central America) since 2001.
History of gambling in Nicaragua: Gambling was originally illegal between 1979 and 2001 in Nicaragua* (before that, it was unregulated). In 2001 the Nicaraguan government voted in favor of legalizing gambling both online and in land-based establishments**, which are both legal ever since.
However, due to the rise of illegal gambling, the government re-addressed the issue with a new gambling act in 2011. This new act, the Special Law 766, for the Control and Regulation of Casinos and Gambling Venues***, made online gambling legal too in 2011, and it is the main piece of gambling legislation of Nicaragua. This new act created a new gaming board under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Tourism and divided the gaming establishments into 4 different categories with specific requirements and sperate licenses. Furthermore, the law outlawed small businesses with slot machines (like grocery stores) and licensing is stricter, and only slot halls with at least 10 machines can get a license (details can be found in the gambling licensing section below).
The government changed the legislation again in 2014, and put gambling under the control of the Ministry of Finance**** and the Financial Analysis Unit (the local tax collector agency) to make the sector complaint of international anti money laundering laws. They created a new “Casino Control Council” too, to help the Ministry of Finance regulate the lucrative gaming business more effectively. The Treasury controls the licences for casinos. In addition, they created an office of casino and gambling halls which responsible for controlling the importation and manufacture of gambling equipment.
