In 1880 the casino was greatly extended, and it was followed by 3 additional casinos, all owned today by MSB.
2019: One of the casinos closed due to the global pandemic.
Apart from the famous casinos Monaco is also a tax haven, and citizens of the country do not have to pay income tax, which made it a popular destination for wealthy Europeans (30% of its population is made up of millionaires, mostly form Western Europe).
Gambling is legal for tourists only1 and illegal for residents, local citizens are not even allowed inside the casinos (unless they work there).
The defining piece of the gambling legislation is the Law No. 1.103 on games of chance (Monégasque Gaming Law 1987)2, and its amendments.
