| Summary: Gambling is legal in Malawi since 1996 (officially the Republic of Malawi, previously known as Nyasaland, a Christian country, in South-eastern Africa, a former British colony, with a population of 20.09 million).

1966: Malawi achieved independence from the British Empire. However, unlike many former British colonies they did not immediately legalized gambling and they did not adopt the British gambling laws.
1996: Legalization of gambling with the 1996 Gambling Law. The Malawi Gaming Board (MGB) was also established this year.
2003: Legalization of lottery, sports betting and online gambling. The National Lotteries Board was also established in 2003.
2015: Gidani International was awarded the the lottery licence. Later on Premier Bet replaced Gidani International as the organizers of the national lottery (offline and online, details below, in the lottery section).
Gambling is legal Malawi since 1966, according the Gambling Act1, which is the main piece of the gambling legislation.
The following forms of games of chance are known to be legal in Malawi, according to the 1998 Gambling Regulations Act2:
- roulette;
- black jack;
- craps;
- punto banco;
- baccarat;
- poker;
- slot machines;
- chemini de fer;
- bingo.
The Malawi Gaming Board has the right to authorize any other types of game of chance. However, the legislation only mentions these specifically, a business needs to apply for a special permission if they want to conduct any other type of gambling (details can be found in the Malawi gambling licensing section below).
This means that sports betting is not possible with a regular gambling licence. Sports betting is only allowed for companies with a lottery licence (details can be found in the Malawi sports betting section below).
Lottery and lottery-like games are also excluded (e.g.: keno, scratch cards, pull-tabs), they are also tied to a lottery licence, of which only one can be issued (details can be found at the Malawi lottery section below).
The gambling sector of Malawi is rather underdeveloped due to the poverty population and the recent downturn in the number of visitors due to the global pandemic.
Online gambling is also legal In Malawi, as evidenced by the existence of a licensed Malawi online gambling site (Premier Bet).
However, Premier Bet is in a special situation, because they are the organizers of the national lottery (they are in possession of the sole Malawi lottery licence).
Online gambling is not possible with a regular gambling licence. However, the lottery licence seems to allow the following online gambling activities, as evidenced by the games portfolio of Premier Bet:

Other types of online gambling do not seem to be legal in Malawi.
