The Eswatini gambling tax rates are set by the 1970 Licensing of Bookmakers and Taxation Act6 (superseding the 1917 Licensing of Bookmakers and Taxation Act), and they are the following:

Gambling is VAT exempt according to the Eswatini Revenue Service8.
The Lottery tax rates are between 10 – 15% determined by the government each year7, it is payable even though section 20 of the 1963 Lotteries Act clearly states that:
“Notwithstanding any law imposing taxation, the licensee is hereby exempted from of all taxes in respect of income he may at any time derive from the public lotteries.”

In 1998, the Swazi government extended the license of the land based Piggs Peak casino, which operated at the border with South Africa. With this new extended, combined online and land-based gambling licence the casino launched the country’s first internet casino platform.
The company accepted players from Eswatini but also from other African countries as well. This resulted in a legal conflict with the South African authorities.
In 2007 the South African Pretoria High Court banned all Eswatini licensed gambling websites from accepting wagers from South African residents. This put an end ot the first Swazi online casino, which went bankrupt shortly after (however, the brick & mortar casino is still in operation).
