Simon’s Guide to Channel Islands Gambling & Online Betting Sites

This is a picture of the landscape of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. On this page you can read about the gambling, online gambling, sports betting, lottery, bingo, bitcoin gambling in the Channel Islands (Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney).

Channel Islands (Jersey, Alderney, Guernsey) gambling guide

Summary: Gambling and online gambling are legal in the Channel Islands.

You can find a list of online gambling websites, which accept players from Bulgaria by scrolling below, or click here to jump to that list:

The Channel Islands are situated in the English Channel, and consist of 7 inhabited islands as well as 4 uninhabited ones. All inhabited islands belong to the Bailiwick of Guernsey except for Jersey, which belongs to the Bailiwick of Jersey (Alderney is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey).

Both Bailiwicks are British Crown Dependencies, but not part of the United Kingdom, and they are also not part of the EU. Acts of the British Parliament do not apply automatically to the islands, but may be extended to them. And the EU online gambling directives also don’t apply here. In general, both Bailiwicks legislate for themselves and in many ways are micronations.

Gambling is legal in both Jersey and Guernsey.

Online gambling is also legal and regulated in the Channel Islands. In fact, they have become one of the online gambling licensing hubs of the world, by taking advantage of their unique legal status, and by becoming a tax haven with no gambling tax or corporate tax.

/Comment: They are basically offshore tax havens for European gambling companies, which fits the history of the islands very well. I recommend looking into it, we will not discuss it here./

History of gambling in the Channel Islands:

Guernsey: The Bailiwick of Guernsey legalized gambling in 1932 (Ordonnance relative à l’usage des machines dites “Slot Machines” et aux Paris1) starting with slot machines. The main piece of the legislation is the Gambling (Alderney) Law, 19992.

And online gambling was legalized in 2001 in Guernsey, according to the Gambling (Interactive Gaming) (Alderney) Ordinance 2001, which was later replaced by the The Alderney eGambling Ordinance3 and its amendments.

Jersey: The Bailiwick of Jersey is quite the latecomer to games of chance in comparison. The have only formally legalized gambling in 2012, with the the Gambling (Jersey) Law 20124, which is still the main piece of the Jersey gambling legislation. This legalized online gambling as well.

Betting on blood sports in the Channel Islands (Guernsey, Jersey)

All forms of blood sports are considered animal cruelty, and are illegal in the Channel Islands. Betting on blood sports is also illegal.

If you are new to the Channel Islands, check out the following video to get a glimpse of what these islands can offer to tourists:

Can tourists play online while visiting the Channel Islands?

Yes, in both bailiwicks.

Gambling licensing in the Channel Islands

There are several online gambling companies licensed and registered in Guernsey, which has a history of issuing such licenses. While Jersey only granted its first online gambling licence in January 20155.

They are both very selective, and they only accept big, established gambling companies with a proven track record, and a good reputation, free from scandals.

A gambling license from the UK channel islands is actually among the best licences an online gambling firm can get.

It’s among the more reputable places, and it’s probably the best offshore gambling hub. This licence is on the UK whitelist, which means companies licensed here can accept players from the UK.

Guernsey gambling licence: Gambling licenses are issued by the Alderney Gambling Control Commission, which is the regulatory and licensing agency.

You have to contact them if you wish to set up any sort of gambling business.

Online gaming licences are also issued by them.

Jersey gambling licence: Gambling licenses are issued by the Jersey Gambling Commission, which is the regulatory and licensing agency.

You have to contact them if you wish to set up any sort of gambling business.

Online gaming licences are also issued by them.

They are not an online gambling hub and there are barely any gambling companies licensed here.

Interestingly, online gambling platforms licensed in the Channel Islands can not accept players from the Channel Islands. This is quite common among offshore tax havens.

Lottery retailer licensing is done separately by the Channel Islands Christmas Lottery.

Land based gambling tax rate: 0%

Online gambling tax rate: 0%

There is no gambling tax or corporate tax in the Channel Islands, instead they have fixed licensing fees, that’s how they make money from the companies licensed there.

/Comment: However, for many years now, there are talks about a tax agreement with the UK. This would mean that gambling companies would have to pay taxes on their activity involving UK residents, even if they are licensed and registered here.

For now, the current agreements do not extend to gambling taxes./

Casino gambling in the Channel Islands

Casinos in the Channel Islands: legal, operators require a licence, charity only

Online casino gambling in the Channel Islands: legal, operators require a licence

Casino gambling is legal, but there are no brick and mortar casinos in the Channel Islands. For profit casinos are forbidden, only non-profit casino gambling is allowed.

St. Pierre Park Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort received the licence to operate a casino, but they don’t have a permanent casino. They only seem to organize temporary charity gambling events with casino games and gaming machines*.

Online casino gambling, on the other hand, thrives in the Channel Islands. Not only is it legal for locals to play online, but the gambling commissions of both Jersey and Guernsey also issue online gambling licenses to commercial, for profit online casino companies.

Interestingly, online casinos licensed in the Channel Islands can not accept players from the two bailiwicks (at least they should not, officially). Locals can only use foreign gambling websites.

Online bingo in the Channel Islands: legal, operators require a a license

Bingo is legal in the Channel Islands, though only charitable games are allowed, commercial bingo is not. Bingo games are organized in both Jersey and Guernsey, in several establishments (clubs, restaurants, etc.), but there isn’t any permanent dedicated bingo hall.

Online bingo is legal, it requires a licence and it is considered gambling. Prospective bingo operators should apply to the commission on the island of their choice for a gambling licence.

Residents of the islands are also free to play on foreign online bingo platforms.

The following online casinos below have live bingo and accepts players from the Channel Islands.

Poker in the Channel Islands

Poker clubs in the Channel Islands: legal, operators require a a license, non profit only

Online poker in the Channel Islands: legal, licence required

Poker is legal in the Channel islands. It is considered a form of casino gambling. Small scale poker games in private homes are permitted, but large-scale poker events need to be authorised by the gambling commission. The limitations on casino gambling apply to poker as well, namely, poker events can only be organized as part of a charity fundraiser.

There are no permanent standalone poker clubs in the Channel Islands.

Online poker is also legal, and requires the same e-gambling gambling licence as online casinos. Licensed online gambling operators need to maintain a physical presence on the islands, or at least be registered here, and have their main office here (but it’s usually an empty virtual office).

Locals looking to play poker can play online, but the locally licensed online poker sites do not accept poker players from the islands for legal reasons.

Sports betting is also legal in the Channel Islands, and requires a licence to operate legally either online or offline

Online sports betting used to require a separate licence in Jersey. However, since 2012, gambling licences are no longer divided into betting and gambling licences*.

Residents of the Channel Islands may wager on both locally licensed and offshore online sports betting sites.

Virtual sports betting is also legal, and there are websites (e.g.: bgo), which are licensed here and operate virtual betting sites (virtual sports betting is betting on a computer simulation of sporting events).

One exception are non-profit fundraiser lotteries and raffles, which can be organized by private individuals or companies with a permission from the gambling commissions of the islands.

The CI CL is a joint lottery of Guernsey and Jersey, and all proceeds from the sale of tickets goes toward non profit initiatives and local projects.

CI CL does not yet have an online lottery platforms, even though it appears to be legal (or at the very least not explicitly illegal).

There are no laws restricting locals from participating in international lottery draws or purchasing lottery tickets abroad in person or through lottery purchasing services (see below).

Apart from CL the following websites let people from the Channel Islands purchase lottery tickets online:

Bitcoin gambling in the Channel Islands

Bitcoin wagering in the Channel Islands: legal, operators require a licence

After the economic success brought on by becoming one of the world’s largest hubs for online gambling, the Channel Islands welcomed bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Though the long-term effects are yet to be seen, the local laws are friendly to bitcoin investments and the industry reacted positively*.

The Channel Islands are among the few countries, which actively accept and license bitcoin casinos.

Operating bitcoin gambling platforms is permissible with e-gambling licenses from any of the bailiwicks, though one should consult the gambling commissions for specifics.

Bitcoin gambling is also legal for locals. Land-based, physical gambling establishments could also, in theory, accept bitcoin.

Thank you for visiting:
This is a selfie of the author and owner of Simon's Casino Gambling Blog, me, Simon András Péter, a.k.a. by the internet pseudonym SimonTheSorcerer, owner of Simon's Online Marketing Kft. This is the homepage of my online casino gambling blog, you can see what's on the website, the links to all the different sections of the website.

That's me, Simon, thank you for visiting.

Don't worry, this is not an ad! ;) Just wanted to make sure to tell you that I'm glad you visited this gambling blog. I'm Simon, the only author and the man behind this blog (if you are interested, my unusual life story can be found on the homepage, under the "About me" dropdown section).
I'm an independent gambling blogger since 2012. In this sector dominated by huge media companies, casino operators and online marketing networks, who can easily spend $ millions on their online gambling blogs, it's not easy for an independent nobody like me to survive. It took me about 6 years, working my ass off, to even have a chance to be noticed by visitors like you. I'm lucky enough that for a few years now, I make enough money to be able to do this full time (before that, I had part-time jobs, ghost writing gigs, online marketing this and that).
Now I can finally do this full time, thanks to visitors like you! And it means a lot! If you are interested, please bookmark this site (no social media profiles, I no longer have any, but please feel free to share anything on any social media networks, if you still use them). I don't have any money to advertise, and if you have a personal blog, any social media profile, please mention my gambling blog and link back to it. This the only way for a small website like this to grow. Thank you!

Charity: As a way to help others, to give back, I sometimes donate to Kiva. If you click on the ads on the website, I make some money. And in a good month, if I make more than my expenses, I donate to people and projects on Kiva.
Kiva helps young entrepreneurs in developing countries, which is an issue close to my heart for obvious reasons. If you have the means, please sign up with the revolutionary non-profit company Kiva.org and help people lift themselves out of poverty, through hard-work, and an initial investment (non-profit loan). These non-profit loans encourage entrepreneurship and hard work instead of creating a dependent class that is afraid to get a job, or start a business (because if they did, they would no longer get support and free money, disincentivezing hard work and entrepreneurship). This is the right way to fight poverty in developing countries (or anywhere else really), and if this is something you are interested in, and if you would like to know more, or to help out, please check out Kiva.org here. Thank you!
