Online casinos in Austria

Legal status of digital casinos in Austria: legal, operators require a casino licence, monopoly of Casinos Austria AG

Online casino gambling is legal in Austria.

Both brick and mortar casinos and online platforms need to obtain a casino license. The casino license covers brick & mortar and internet gambling (details of the licensing system and process can be found below, at the licensing section).

There is currently only one licensed casino operator with an Austrian casino licence, that is Casinos Austria International AG, which operates the gambling platform Win2Day.

Casinos Austria International AG has a monopoly on casinos and online casinos. Other companies can not get a casinos licence, at the very least until 2027 (but it will likely be extended).

Win2Day is jointly owned by Casinos Austria AG and Österreichische Lotterien, and even though it offers a wide array of games, including various slots, blackjack, video poker and roulette it is still inferior to international casinos, which have vastly more and superior games and promotions.

Playing in foreign online casinos is also legal, according to EU laws, especially the freedom to provide services, Article 56 of TFEU1.

According to Article 56: if a country does not provide any means for foreign online casinos to acquire local licenses, then they can not punish or block these gambling websites, or players who visit them.

/Comment: And online casino gambling is a monopoly of Casinos Austria, foreign online gambling companies can not acquire online casino licenses./

Players who play in foreign online casinos are not prosecuted or fined.

By scrolling below, you can find a list of online casinos, which accept Austrian players.

Can tourists play online while visiting Austria?

Yes, the online gambling laws of most country, including Austria, only apply to citizens and lawful permanent residents. If you are a tourist (or a non-citizen expat, or illegal migrant), you can play online freely while enjoying your vacation.

Online casino licensing and regulatory body of Austria:

Companies that wish to operate online casino sites in the country need to obtain a casino licence in order to be allowed to offer their services. The licensing authority of Austria is is the Special Responsibilities Unit of the Tax Authority.

You have to contact them if you wish to set up any sort of gambling business in the country. Website is available in English as well.

However, only Casinos Austria is allowed to operate casinos. It’s a monopoly.

There is no separate online casino licenses, the brick & mortar casino license covers internet games as well.

Licensing requirements:

Companies who have undergone this lengthy and complex process are allowed to operate online casinos, but these licensed gambling websites may only accept players from Austria.

Land-based casinos in Austria

Legal status of casinos in Austria: legal since 1934, operators require a licence, slot halls are also legal, casinos area monopoly of Casinos Austria AG

Land-based casino gambling is legal since 1934 in Austria, according to the Gambling Law (Glücksspielgesetz)1.

Casino Baden was first casino in Austria, it opened its doors in 1934. And it is in continuous operation ever since (except for a brief hiatus during World War 2).

The Constitution of Austria allows monopolies to be created by the federal legislator. Such a monopoly was created in October 2012 when the Austrian government signed an agreement with Casinos Austria International AG, that gave the company exclusive rights to brick and mortar casinos for 15 years (expires in 2027, but it will likely be extended).

Founded in 1934, Österreichische Casino AG has since expanded to more than 15 countries. At the moment, they operate 12 casinos in the country, and around 40 internationally.

Austrian casinos also benefit from the high number of tourists vesting the country, namely, 41 million visitors every year2. Most casinos are attached to a hotel as well, perfectly positioned to take advantage of this.

Casinos are overseen by the Austrian Tax Authority (a subdivision of the Ministry of Finance). Companies that wish to operate casinos within the borders of Austria must obtain a casino licence, except if it’s so called “small gambling” (kleines Glücksspiel).

Slot halls are also legal (there are hundreds of them, they do not fall under the monopoly). They do not require a casino license, instead they operate according to the regional small gambling regulations of the 9 federated states.

/Small gambling: It is under the jurisdiction of individual federated states, which means that regulations vary within Austria.

Regulations also determine the maximum amount of gambling facilities, usually the number of licenses cannot exceed the following ratio: one gaming venue for every 1200 residents (and one per 600 residents in Vienna, because of the tourists).

Small gambling has strict rules in general:

The following 4 regions of Austria banned small scale gambling entirely: Vorarlberg, Salzburg, Tyrol, Vienna./

Austrian casinos are generally quite elegant – some might say luxurious, posh – establishments, often enforcing dress codes and some even have entrance fees.

Some of the casinos, e.g.: Casino Wien, offer jackets for hire to tourists who are are dressed too leisurely.

All of the Austrian casinos are small or below average in size, by international standards.

You can find all the currently operating brick and mortar casinos in the list below.

Can locals visit the casinos in Austria?

Yes, both locals and tourists can play in the casinos.

Crypto, bitcoin casinos in Austria

Legal status: not specifically regulated

Bitcoin gambling in Austria is not specifically regulated, the general online gambling laws apply to it.

Which means, Austrian players can freely access bitcoin casinos from all around the world.

Cryptocurrencies are currently neither treated as financial instruments nor as currency. Instead, bitcoin (and other alternative digital currencies, e.g.: litecoin or ethereum) are treated as commodities.

And because of this, none of the land-based casinos in the country accept cryptocurrencies.

Other forms of online gambling in Austria

Online games other than casino gambling are generally legal and are a monopoly of either the Österreichische Lotterien or Casinos Austria AG. The main online gambling site of Austria is Win2Day (a join venture between the Austrian lottery and the Austrian Casinos group).

Apart from online casino games, Win2Day offers online bingo, various online lotteries, online poker (live poker, but interestingly no video poker).

Apart from the locally licensed online gambling companies and sites, Austrian gamblers may also play on international gambling sites. Most of these welcome players from Austria, and many of them are available in German as well.

Sports betting is also legal in the country and the biggest bookmaker is Admiral Sportwetten (part of Novomatic), which has an online platform as well.

The following online gambling websites accept players from Austria:

Thank you for visiting:
This is a selfie of the author and owner of Simon's Casino Gambling Blog, me, Simon András Péter, a.k.a. by the internet pseudonym SimonTheSorcerer, owner of Simon's Online Marketing Kft. This is the homepage of my online casino gambling blog, you can see what's on the website, the links to all the different sections of the website.
That's me, Simon, thank you for visiting.
Don't worry, this is not an ad! ;) Just wanted to make sure to tell you that I'm glad you visited this gambling blog. I'm Simon, the only author and the man behind this blog (if you are interested, my unusual life story can be found on the homepage, under the "About me" dropdown section).
I'm an independent gambling blogger since 2012. In this sector dominated by huge media companies, casino operators and online marketing networks, who can easily spend $ millions on their online gambling blogs, it's not easy for an independent nobody like me to survive. It took me about 6 years, working my ass off, to even have a chance to be noticed by visitors like you. I'm lucky enough that for a few years now, I make enough money to be able to do this full time (before that, I had part-time jobs, ghost writing gigs, online marketing this and that).
Now I can finally do this full time, thanks to visitors like you! And it means a lot! If you are interested, please bookmark this site (no social media profiles, I no longer have any, but please feel free to share anything on any social media networks, if you still use them). I don't have any money to advertise, and if you have a personal blog, any social media profile, please mention my gambling blog and link back to it. This the only way for a small website like this to grow. Thank you!

Logo of Kiva.org. You can read about my non-profit activity right next to the picture.
Charity: As a way to help others, to give back, I sometimes donate to Kiva. If you click on the ads on the website, I make some money. And in a good month, if I make more than my expenses, I donate to people and projects on Kiva.
Kiva helps young entrepreneurs in developing countries, which is an issue close to my heart for obvious reasons. If you have the means, please sign up with the revolutionary non-profit company Kiva.org and help people lift themselves out of poverty, through hard-work, and an initial investment (non-profit loan). These non-profit loans encourage entrepreneurship and hard work instead of creating a dependent class that is afraid to get a job, or start a business (because if they did, they would no longer get support and free money, disincentivezing hard work and entrepreneurship). This is the right way to fight poverty in developing countries (or anywhere else really), and if this is something you are interested in, and if you would like to know more, or to help out, please check out Kiva.org here. Thank you!
By being on this site, you agree to terms and conditions, and privacy policy. You must be at least 18, and if you are a gambling addict, or a citizen of Hungary, please leave the site.
