This is a picture of Grand Casino Baden, probably the most beautiful casino building in all of the Swiss confederation. Under the picture, on this page, you can read about Swiss casino gambling legislation, history, tax, and you can find a list of brick&mortar casinos and Swiss gambling licenced online casinos which accept players from the country legally.

Online casinos in Switzerland

Legal status: legal, gambling companies require a licence, Casino A or B licence with an online casino gambling extension

The Swiss online gambling legislation underwent a huge change in 2018, with the passing of  the so called Geldspielgesetz, which means Money Gambling Act (effective 2019). For the first time ever, in the history of the Swiss Confederation, online casino gambling licenses can e acquired by private companies. Prior to the current situation, online casino gambling and online gambling in general was regulated by the the Federal Act on Games of Chance of 1998, which explicitly stated that the use of an electronic communications network such as the internet for organizing games of chance is not allowed.

In accordance with current law, the licencing system for online casinos is the responsibility of the Swiss Federal Gaming Board. A land-based casino licence is the prerequisite of a Swiss online gambling licence. Only companies which operate a brick&mortar casino can apply for a licence extension through a public concession. The maximum amount of online gambling licenses that can be issued is currently set to 21. Although, it’s also possible for a company to have a joint venture, or to buy a stake in a company with a Swiss online gambling licence, and process their Swedish players through them. In fact, the online casinos below a Switzerland gambling licence below all do it like this.

Since 2018, unlicensed online casinos are blocked by ISPs (internet service providers). However, individual players who play in unlicensed online casinos are not fined or prosecuted. Still, it’s illegal and we do not recommend it.

Interestingly, before the legalization of online casinos in 2018 (effective 2019) there was one online casino like website in Switzerland, which was on the line between a real online casino, and a platform strictly for free-to-play casino games. Swiss Casinos (the biggest Swiss casino group, they operate Switzerland’s biggest casino, and in total they have 5 Swiss gambling venues) has created an online gambling website where players could try various games without depositing any money. Players couldn’t actually play for money, but Casino Zürich offered various gifts for specified amounts of coins, which you could win by playing. Gifts available included entrance tickets to their brick and mortar casinos, slot cards and various coupons. It’s interesting that this was legal and they could get away with it, and weird that a huge casino company felt the need to do something like this, it’s usually smaller companies that try to bend the rules to make money. Since the legalization, they have acquired a real online gambling licence and turned it into a real (but pretty bad IMO, very few games, not that great games) online casino, the first Swiss online casino (and they have many agreements with foreign companies who funnel their players through their online casino). You can see these online casinos below. If they no longer accept Swiss players, or if they are blocked in the country, please let me know in the comments section below, so I can update the list. Thank you.

Casino tax Switzerland: Land based gambling establishments have pay 40% tax on their gross gambling revenue up to CHF 10 million per tax year. For every additional million francs, the tax rate is increased by 0.5% up to a maximum of 80%.

Land-based casinos in Switzerland

Gambling in Switzerland is legal since 1923 and thoroughly regulated, for a much longer time than online casinos. The authority in charge of supervising casinos in Switzerland and issuing licences is the Swiss Federal Gaming Board. Brick and mortar casinos are also regulated by the 2018 Gambling Act, and prior to that it was the Federal Act on Games of Chance of 1998.

There are currently 21 licensed casinos in Switzerland, which is the maximum allowed number of licensed casinos in Switzerland. Eight of them are”Class A” casinos and the other thirteen are “Class B”. Each casino needs their own casino licence. There are two types of gambling establishment licenses Casino A – the grand casino licence, with no limits and Casino B – the resort casino licence with various limits on the number of games and stakes (you can read more about the Swiss casino licensing system here). The maximum number of casino licenses that can be issued is 21.

Switzerland is officially a confederation made up of 20 cantons and 6 half-cantons. Casino gambling is regulated on a federal level, but cantons have to give their consent for a land-based casino to receive a licence in that canton. The minimum age of entry varies between 18 and 20 by canton. Id is required to enter, and for tourists passport.

UPDATE COIVD-19: There is no unified federal COVID-19 regulation for casinos, the cantons decide, you can see the casinos and their current status below.

The largest land-based casino in Switzerland is Swiss Casino Zürich, located in the capital of the country. And the biggest casino groups active in the country are:  Swiss Casinos Services AG, better known as Swiss Casinos, with 5 casinos, the French Barriére group with  3 casino, and Casinos Austria the gambling company of the Austrian state, which owns 3 of the 21 Switzerland casinos.

Interestingly, the casino companies present on the Swiss market are not profitable since 2007, in fact many have losses in the millions of €, per month. Even with the new 2018 gambling legislation many of them remain in the red, due to the extremely high gambling and online gambling taxes in the coutnry.

Online casino tax Switzerland: Licensed online gambling companies have to pay 20% tax on their gross gambling revenue, up to CHF 3 million. For every additional million francs, the tax rate is increased by 0.5% up to a maximum of 80%.

List of the TOP 5 best and biggest Swiss casinos:

This is a picture of the building of Casino Lugano. This is the first, and opening element on this list of Switzerland casinos, you can see the others below this one.. You can read about the casino gambling establishment to the right.
Casino Lugano

1.,Casino Lugano, Via Stauffacher 1, 6900 Lugano

The oldest, and presently the biggest Swiss casino, both in terms of the number of machines and also gaming area. In operation since 1885 (only a casinos since 1912, before that it was a theater). It is a state owned casinos; majority owned by the Ticino Swiss canton.

The currency casino complex has 500 slots (good brands, most slots are from the 2010s, but they have many new slots too, good selection), has 27 tables (ultimate t0exas hold’em, blackjack, american roulette, punto banco). American roulette has worse odds for the player than the more appropriate European roulette that should be in a European casino, it’s a bad sign. Avoid american roulette, it’s a sign that the gaming venue tries to minimize your chances of winning, which shouldn’t be okay with you. Don’t support this, refuse to place bets at the american roulette table.

They have a poker section, types of poker played: 7 card stud, pot limit omaha, texas hold’em, telesina*. No info about the maximum capacity of the poker room, but it’s big, the Swiss Poker Championship is often takes place here.

*Telesina: a poker variant from Italy, five card stud poker, but instead of the standard 52 cards deck, it uses the so called 32 cards French poker deck.

Opening hours: 10:00 – 22:00, every day (tables are open from 12:00)

UPDATE COVID-19: the casino is open despite the global pandemic.

Dress code: smart casual

Entrance fee: no entrance fee

Meta review analysis: consistently good, 4/5 or better reviews on reviews sites. No big problems.

18+, ID, and passport for tourists, is needed to enter.

This is a picture of Swiss Casinos Zürich's building with decorative Christmas lights covering the outside of the building. This is the second element on this list of Switzerland casinos. You can read more about this casino to the right of the picture.
Swiss Casinos Zürich

2.,Swiss Casinos Zürich, Gessnerallee 3-5, Haus Ober, 8001 Zürich

Currently, Casino Zürich is the second largest casino of Switzerland, and this is the flagship casino of the largest casino group of the country, Swiss Casinos Services AG, better known as Swiss Casinos, who operate 5 casinos in Switzerland (one of them is closed temporarily). This casino has probably the ugliest building of all the Swiss casinos (how it looks on the picture to the left, with the decorative Christmas lights, is really not representative, usually it’s just an ugly concrete slab, it has no personality, no beauty, utilitarian to the max), but it looks very good inside.

They have 280 slots (very good brands, best money can buy, most of them are very recent, some are older from 2010s, sadly no really old machine, I personally love it if a casino keeps a few classic, “old school” mechanical machine around, as a sort of “blast from the past”, for fun, bets range from CHF 0.01 to CH 400). They have 32 tables (7 american roulette tables, 6 black jack, 1 punto banco). First of all, american roulette in a European casino? It’s always a bad sign! American roulette has the worst RTP (odds for the player) of all the various types of roulette. If a European casino decides to replace the more appropriate European (a.k.a French) roulette it means the casino wants plyers to lose money as fast and as much as possible, bad optics IMO. Avoid american roulette.

They also have 2 electronic roulette wheels with 32 terminals. There is a poker section with texas hold’em (4 tables, seating 10 people each), ultiamte teaxas hold’em (2 tables, seating 10 each).

Interestingly, there is a smoking gaming area with tables and slots, which is pretty rare in Europe anymore (most of the casino is non-smoking though). Nowadays, smokers, even in casinos, are relegated to their tiny smoker’s section (affectionately called “gulag”, with a slang term), which don’t have any machines. Pretty good idea, apparently, local laws allow this, in most of Europe it’s no longer possible for legal reasons.

Opening hours:

Sunday to Thursday 11.00 am – 04.00 am
Friday and Saturday 11.00 am – 07.00 am

Tables: from 2:00 pm

UPDATE COVID-19: the casino is open despite the epidemic form China. However, the casino will be closed from December 9, 2020 at 24.00 am until January 10, 2021.

Dress code: smart casual

Entrance fee: Free until 7:00 pm. CHF 10 per person from 7:00 pm.

Meta review analysis: consistently good, 4/5 or better reviews on reviews sites. No big problems. Most people only criticize the entrance fee, a lot of people think it’s greedy for the casino to charge an entrance fee too (it’s not really for the money, it’s to keep away the riff-raff with no money, usually they are the problematic people, drunk and perhaps on drugs too, the minorities, muslim  migrant workers who might stab you if they have bad day, homeless people, those types, it keeps them away, and because of political correctness you can’t say “poor people, coloured, migrant workers, muslims, mentally deranged people can’t enter” anymore, sadly, but that’s really the reason why casinos have an entrance fee, it’s the politically correct way to keep them away, and they make some extra money in the process too).

18+, ID, and for tourists passport, is needed to enter.

This is a picture of the Swiss gambling establishment Casino Barriere de Montreux. You can read more about this casino next to this picture.
Casino Barriere de Montreux

3.,Casino Barriere de Montreux, Rue du Théâtre 9, 1820 Montreux

This is the flagship casino of the Barriére group, which owns 3 casinos in Switzerland (and about 30 in France).

Sadly, the website of the casino is very bare bones, with little information, only a phone number to call, which is unacceptable in this day and age, especially form such a big casino company. Very bad first impression.

They have around 360 slots, and 17 tables (8 roulette tables, 7 blackjack, 2 poker tables).

They have a poker section too, but there is no info about it on the website.

Opening hours: every day 04:00pm – 03:00am, except Friday, Saturday – 04:00pm – 05:00am.

UPDATE COVID-19: the casino is closed until further notice, since 2020 November 5.

Dress code: from the website: “appropriate clothing (no vest tops, shorts, swimming costumes, etc.)”. I interpret this as smart casual. Would have been nice if they would have provided a dress code instead of making things more complicated with the subjective, open to interpretation “appropriate clothing” line. The universally recognized dress codes are: causal, smart causal, semi-formal, formal. They should have picked one.

Entrance fee: no info about it on the website.

Meta review analysis: very good, 4,5/5 – 4/5 on review sites, the best rated Swiss casino.

18+, ID, and for tourists passport, is needed to enter.

This is a picture of Grand Casino Bern in the Swiss canton of Bern. You can read about this gaming venue on the right.
Grand Casino Bern at Kursaal Hotel

4.,Grand Casino Bern at Kursaal Hotel, Kornhausstrasse 3, 3013 Bern

One of the newer casinos of Switzerland, open since 2002.

The gaming venue has 350 slots and 14 tables (american roulette, black jack, ultimate texas hold ’em, diceball). Avoid american roulette, has the worst RTP of any type of roulette. Not to mention, why does a European casino has american roulette instead of the European roulette that has significantly better odds for the players? The question answers itself… Bad optics.

Opening hours:

Sunday to Wednesday: 12 noon–2 a.m.
Thursday: 12 noon–4 a.m.
Friday and Saturday: 12 noon–5 a.m.
Table games are offered daily from 2 p.m.

The casino has extended opening times on the following dates (until 4 a.m.):

Sunday, 20 December 2020, to Wednesday, 23 December 2020
Sunday, 27 December 2020, to Wednesday, 30 December 2020

The opening times change on the following dates due to the changing of the clocks:

On Sunday, 25 October 2020, the clocks go back an hour from 3 a.m. to 2 a.m. The casino will stay open for one hour longer.

UPDATE COVID-19: open, despite the pandemic.

Dress code: smart casual

Entrance fee: CHF 10

Meta review analysis: consistently good, 4/5 or better reviews on reviews sites. No big problems.

This is a picture of Grand Casino Baden, This is the fifth and last Swiss casino on this list, you can see the other elements above this one. You can read about this casino to the right of the picture.
Grand Casino Baden

5.,Grand Casino Baden, Haselstrasse 2, 5400 Baden

Casino Baden is part of Casinos Austria, and it’s their flagship casino in Switzerland. This gaming venue has a very interesting unique approach to the casino experience. They combined high tech features (huge LED displayes, HD screens, livestreaming your results), disco atmosphere (live DJ, music requests, strobing lights) to create something weird, which I find utterly stressful and unappealing, but I’m sure it has its fans.

Here are some pictures ,because this is hard to put into words:

At least it’s unique, but looks more stressful than fun, not to mention loud, really not what I look for on the weekends after a stressful week at work. I don’t think the over 30 crowd appreciates this, they must be targeting young people. It’s called the Game Zone, it’s on Friday and Saturday from 19:00.

They have 340 slots (mixed bag, above average selection) and 28 tables (american roulette – 11 tables, baccarat – 2 tables, blackjack – 6 tables, chemin de fer – 2 tables, European roulette – 5 tables, punto banco – 1 table and one Wheel-of-Fortune). They have French, a.k.a. European roulette, it has much better odds than the american one, just avoid american roulette. I love that they have Wheel-of-Fortune, probably my favourite  game in a casino, try it if you haven’t already, it’s really fun. Really good games selection.

They also have electronic american roulette with 24 terminals.

They have a poker section with 8 tables, maximum capacity: 80 players simultaneously.

Opening hours: 12:00 – 04:00 (except Friday: 3:00pm to 5:30am), tables, poker tables open at: 15:00

UPDATE COVID-19: temporary closed

Dress code: smart casual, from the website: closed footwear and long trousers for men (no shorts, no sportswear).

Entrance fee: CHF 10

Meta review analysis: 4/5 on review sites, pretty good reviews. No big problems.

Bitcoin casino Switzerland

Cryptocurrency gambling is not yet regulated in Switzerland. Therefore, none of the land-based casinos accept bitcoin (if you know of any Swiss casino that accepts cryptocurrencies, please let me know, drop a line in the comments section below).

However, the online casinos that have partnered with Swiss companies to accept players from he country accept alternative digital currencies (if nothing else then through Skrill, look for Skrill in the payment options).  You can see them below, many of them accept bitcoin, bitcoincash, litecoin and some of them even accepts ethereum.

Other forms of online gambling in Switzerland

Most forms of online gambling are legal since the 2018 change in online gambling legislation. However, quite a lot of them remain the monopoly of the state run companies.

The main profile of both operators is lottery. Swisslos is an online lottery operator targeting the German-speaking population of the country. (Switzerland has four official languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh). Swisslos offers traditional number games, Euromillions, as well as online bingo.

Loterie Romande is also an online lottery operator, targeted mainly at Switzerland’s French-speaking players. The games on offer through their website are practically the same as those of Swisslos. Instant-win games are also available.

Both operators also offer online sports betting, but players may only bet on football games currently. There are no other licensed online sports betting operators in Switzerland, but some of the online casinos which have Swiss licenses have a sports betting section, even though they probably shouldn’t, they let their Swiss players use it, even though the online casino licence does not cover online sports betting.

The situation is much the same when it comes to online poker. Online poker is, in theory, banned in Switzerland, but some of the licensed online casinos have poker in addition to casino games, and that way Swiss players can play poker online too. You can see these online casinos below. If they no longer accept Swiss players, or if they are blocked in the country, please let me know in the comments section below, so I can update the list. Thank you.

Future of online casinos in Switzerland

Online poker and sports betting are currently a monopoly of the state in Switzerland. The European trends show that more and more countries decide to liberalise their entire online gambling market, mainly to prevent unlicensed operators form gaining ground, and for the extra income from taxation.

Although Switzerland is located in the heart of Europe, it is not a member of the European Union. As a result, the EU regulations against online gambling monopolies do not apply to Switzerland.

However, considering recent trends in the European economic are, it’s likely that he days of the Swiss online poker and online sports betting monopoly are numbered.

Thank you for visiting:
This is a selfie of the author and owner of Simon's Casino Gambling Blog, me, Simon András Péter, a.k.a. by the internet pseudonym SimonTheSorcerer, owner of Simon's Online Marketing Kft. This is the homepage of my online casino gambling blog, you can see what's on the website, the links to all the different sections of the website.
That's me, Simon, thank you for visiting.
Don't worry, this is not an ad! 😉 Just wanted to make sure to tell you that I'm glad you visited this gambling blog. I'm Simon, the only author and owner of this independent gambling blog (if you are interested, my unusual life story can be found on the homepage, under the "About me" dropdown section).
I'm an independent gambling blogger since 2012, and in this industry dominated by huge media companies, gambling companies and online marketing companies, who can easily spend $ millions on their online gambling blogs, it's not easy for an independent nobody like me to even appear in search engines (I do everything, I don't have any employees, no venture funding). It took me about 6 years, working my ass off, for search engines to start putting my site in front of visitors like you, and I'm lucky enough that for a few years now, I make enough money to be able to do this full time (before that, I had part-time jobs, ghost writing gigs, online marketing this and that, to make ends meet, I hated it, I'm glad I no longer have to do it, other freelancers can probably relate).
Now I can finally do this full time, thanks to visitors like you, and it means a lot! If you are interested, please bookmark this site (no social media profiles, I no longer have any, on purpose, for various reasons I'm not getting into here, but please feel free to share anything on any social media networks, if you still use them). I don't have any money to advertise, and if you have a personal blog, any social media profile, your own blog, please mention my gambling blog and link back to it. This the only way for a small website like this to grow. Thank you!

Charity: As a way to help others, to give back, I sometimes donate to Kiva. If you click on the ads on the website, I make some money (but not much, much less than you probably expect, and I only get any if you register an account, and you actually deposit some money). But on a good month, if I make more than my expenses, I donate to charities, primarily Kiva.
Kiva helps young entrepreneurs in developing countries, which is an issue close to my heart for obvious reasons. If you have the means, please sign up with the revolutionary non-profit company Kiva.org and help people lift themselves out of poverty, through hard-work, and an initial investment (non-profit loans). These non-profit loans encourage entrepreneurship and hard work, instead of creating a dependent class that is afraid to get a job, or start a business (because if they did, they would no longer get benefits and free money). This is the right way to fight poverty in developing countries (or anywhere else really), and if this is something you are interested in, and if you would like to know more, or to help out, please check out Kiva.org here. Thank you!
By being on this site, you agree to terms and conditions, and privacy policy. You must be at least 18, and if you are a gambling addict, or a citizen of Hungary, please leave the site.
