Myanmar, officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and also known as Burma is a sovereign state located in South Asia. Myanmar shares borders with Bangladesh, India, China, Laos, and Thailand. Myanmar has an uninterrupted coastline along the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.
Myanmar became a British colony in the 19th century (following 3 Anglo-Burmese Wars) and remained a British territory till 1948. After gaining its independence, Myanmar operated as a democratic nation but due to a coup in 1962 became a military dictatorship. The dictatorship ended in 2011 but many party leaders are former military officers.
Myanmar is rich in jade, gems, oil, natural gas and other mineral resources, however, the income gap is the largest in the world as the supporters of the former military dictatorship control a large portion of the economy. According to the Human Development Index (HDI), Myanmar placed 150th from the 187 countries researched in 2014.*
Gambling in Myanmar is completely illegal (except for lottery and online lottery), only tourists allowed to take part in such activities. Despite these regulations, there weren’t any prosecutions or arrests regarding gambling. Currently, 5 casinos are operating in Myanmar targeting tourists, 2 in Tachilek, 2 in Thahtay Kyun, and one in Chiang Saen. Online gambling is illegal too, but players are not prosecuted. Many offshore online casinos are accepting players from Myanmar.
The only form of gambling, which is legal is the Myanmar Lottery (which is available online too) called, Aungbarlay (“you may win”). The lottery is a state monopoly.

The focus is not on winning or losing but how beautifully one plays the game. Due to it being illegal in Myanmar, Myanmarian citizens aren’t allowed to bet on their favorite teams legally. However, tourists are allowed to bet on sports because it’s legal for them. Online sports betting is illegal too, but if Myanmarian citizens make bets on an online platform they won’t be prosecuted.

Arguably, the lottery is the most common form of gambling around the world. It’s safe to say that a country where gambling is legal has a national lottery. Gambling is illegal in Myanmar but the country has a national lottery for its citizens called Aungbarlay. The first lottery in Myanmar was introduced back in 1878 during the reign of King Thibaw Min in an attempt to raise state revenues. Due to some issues (conflicts of interest, and condemnation against gambling by Buddhist monks to name a few) the lottery ended in 1880. The current lottery was introduced by the British in 1938 and it is still the only legal form of gambling for Myanmarian citizens. The national lottery is drawn monthly and generates an estimated US$30 million per year for the government.* The lottery is administered by the Ministry of Finance’s State Lottery Department. The lottery tickets are printed at the same location as the country’s money and passports (Wazi, Magwe Region).*Some reports say that Myanmarian citizens tend to play illegal lotteries around the country despite the national lottery being legal.

Bitcoin gambling in Myanmar: not regulated
Bitcoin is a digital currency often referred to as a “cryptocurrency” first introduced in 2008. It quickly became popular around the world as an alternative form of payment. Bitcoin gambling appeared shortly after the introduction of Bitcoin and its popularity is growing fast as more and more online casinos started to specialize in it. Bitcoin is still a relatively new phenomenon, so only just a handful of countries issued laws concerning it. In Myanmar, there aren’t any specific laws concerning Bitcoin gambling or Bitcoin in general as of now.
