Guide to gambling in Niger

Niger, officially the Republic of Niger is a landlocked country in Western Africa, named after the Niger River. Niger shares borders with Libya to the northeast, Chad to the east, Nigeria and Benin to the south, Burkina Faso and Mali to the west, and Algeria to the northwest. Niger is the largest country in West Africa, covering a land area of almost 1,270,000 km2. Almost 80% of Niger’s land is covered by the Sahara Desert, so the predominantly Islamic population of 17 million is clustered in the far south and west of the country. Most of the population lives in rural areas. Niger’s capital is Niamey which is located in the southwest corner of the country.*

Niger is a developing country and is constantly one of the lowest-ranked in the United Nations’ Human Development Index. In 2013, the country ranked last in the index.* Most of the country’s non-desert areas are threatened by periodic droughts and desertification. Furthermore, the country faces the issue of overpopulation due to the lack of birth control. Other problems are the poor education and health care and the ever growing poverty of the nation’s population.

Before colonisation, Niger was mostly a trade route as part of many empires like The Songhai Empire, The Hausa Kingdoms, The Mali Empire, and The Kanem-Bornu Empire. Niger became a French colony in 1900 and remained a colony till 1958 when the Overseas Reform Act (1956) and the establishment of the Fifth French Republic gave an autonomous state status to Niger inside the French Community. The full independence came in 1960 when Niger decided to leave the French Community. The country’s official language remained French.

Since independence, Nigeriens have lived under 5 constitutions and 3 military dictatorships. After a 2010 military coup, Niger became a democratic, multi-party state.

Gambling is legal in Niger, gambling consists mostly of a single casino and the national lottery. There is only one official casino in Niger, operating inside Hotel Gaweye at the capital city. There is no other evidence of any organized gambling in the country, though. However, the nation’s population is mostly Islamic, so they are forbidden to gamble by The Quran but there isn’t any official government issued law concerning (or banning) gambling in Niger.

Online gambling is not regulated in Niger.
