Guide to Gambling in Mayotte

Mayotte, officially the Département de Mayotte is an overseas department and region of France. It consists of the main island, Grande-Terre (or Maore), a smaller island, Petit-Terre (or Pamanzi), and a couple islets around these two. The archipelago is located in the northern Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean off the coast of South Africa, between northwestern Madagascar and northeastern Mozambique. Mayotte’s population is around 212,000. The nation is very densely populated at 569 per km². The biggest city and prefecture of Mayotte is Mamoudzou located on Grande-Terre. The Dzaoudzi-Pamandzi International Airport is located on the smaller island, though.

In 1500, a sultanate was established on the island and Portuguese explorers started to observe the territory in 1503. They didn’t colonize it, though. Mayotte was conquered a couple times during the early 19th century by neighboring kings and sultanates. However, the nation regained its independence in 1836 under the last local Sultan. The independence didn’t last long as France purchased the island in 1841. Mayotte was the only nation in the archipelago that voted in referendums 1974 and 1976 to retain its link with France and forgo independence. Despite this, in a draft issued by the United Nations Security Council in 1976 recognized Comorian sovereignty over Mayotte but France vetoed it. This “Comorian” problem was a continued issue the following years but Mayotte remained a French territory.

Mayotte became an overseas department of France in 2011 as a result of a 2009 referendum. 95% of the voters voted in favor to become a France’s 101st département. So French laws, social welfare, and taxes apply to Mayotte since then.

Because it’s a French department, the gambling laws of French apply to the nation so gambling is completely legal. Online gambling is legal too, so players from Mayotte can play in numerous offshore online casinos. The dominant religion in Mayotte is Islam, but Islamic laws are not officially recognized by France therefore, gambling is not forbidden. There are no land-based or domestic online casinos operating in Mayotte as of now despite gambling being legal. The main reasons behind it are that Mayotte is not a popular tourist destination and the dominant religion of Islam (although Islamic laws are not official).
