Guide to Gambling in Lybia

Lybia is a country in the Maghreb Region of North Africa. The country shares borders with the Mediterranian Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad and Niger to the south, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west. Lybia is the 4th largest country in Africa and the 16th largest in the world with an area around 1.8 million square kilometers. The 3 traditional parts of the country are Tripolitania, Fezzan, and Cyrenaica. Despite it being so big, only a little more than 6 million people lives in the country. Lybia’s capital and largest city is Tripoli with a population of approximately 1 million citizens.

Lybia has been inhabited by Berbers since the late Bronze Age. The Phoenicians were the first to establish trading posts in western Lybia, followed by the Ancient Greek colonists who established city states in the eastern part of the country. Lybia was ruled by different empires throughout its history like the Persians, Egyptians, Greeks, and the Romans. Lybia was an early center of Christianity but after the fall of the Roman Empire, Arab colonization brought Islam to the country. In 1551, the country became part of the Ottoman Empire and remained in it until the early 20th century.

Lybia became an Italian colony in 1911 and served as an important area of warfare in the North African Campaign during World War II. Lybia gained independence as a kingdom in 1951. In 1969, due to Muammar Gaddafi’s military coup, the country became a dictatorship. Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011 when the Lybian Civil War erupted. Since then, the country experienced political instability and violence which severely affected both commerce and oil production (Lybia has the 10th largest oil reserves in the world).

As of now, at least two political bodies claim to be the government of Lybia. The Council of Deputies is the internationally recognized legit government but it does not hold territory in the capital. The other one is the New General National Congress which resides in Tripoli. Parts of Lybia are controlled by the infamous jihadist militant group, ISIS.

Gambling in Lybia is completely illegal due to the official religion of the country, Islam. There are no land-based establishments where players could enjoy the popular games like roulette, blackjack, poker, or bingo to name a few. The Sharia Law forbids all kinds of gambling as it sees gambling addicting, evil, and an activity which causes people to forget their social responsibilities. Online gambling is forbidden too for the same reasons. The anti-gambling laws are heavily enforced by the government.
