The laws of Bahrain, as are the laws of most Middle-Eastern countries are deeply rooted in Islamic faith and tradition, namely Sha’ria law. And consequently forms of gambling are currently illegal in Bahrain, with no exceptions.
70%+ of the population is Muslin, therefore this is unlikely to change anytime soon.
The Constitution of Bahrain states that Islam is the official religion and that Shari’a (Islamic law) is a principal source for legislation2.
Sharia law and gambling: In Bahrain, as in the entire Muslim world, all forms of gambling are forbidden by the Islamic law.
According to Islamic law:
- It is unlawful for the Muslim to gain wealth by gambling: According to the Islamic teaching one ought to earn a living by honest, serious, hard work, and relying on luck to gain money is contrary to this principle.
- Muslims must not participate in gambling for recreational purposes: The reason for this prohibition lies in the addictive nature of gambling, which causes the gambler to neglect his responsibilities to society and the Creator. Interestingly, gambling is mentioned in conjunction with drinking, emphasizing the similarities and connection between gambling addiction and alcoholism.
Gambling is strictly forbidden by the Quran, and it is considered Satan’s handiwork.
Online gambling is also illegal in Bahrain. Online gambling is not mentioned in the criminal code of Bahrain. However, because all forms of gambling are considered illegal it applies to digital games of chance as well.
