- lottery (legal since 19692, it was a state monopoly, UPDATE: since 2020, it is no longer a monopoly of state owned Caixa, in 2020, the Brazilian Supreme Court declared the monopoly unconstitutional in a surprising move3, this opened up the possibility for the 28 provinces to legalize lottery locally)
- poker (tournament poker only, none of the clubs have cash games) and other games of skill, where the outcome is not entirely based on chance (gambling laws are not applicable to games of skill)
bingo(used to be legal, but the Provisional Measure 168/2004 made it illegal federally)- fixed odds sports betting (legal since 2018, according to law 13,756/20184)
- fantasy sports betting (not considered gambling, gambling laws do not apply)
UPDATE 2021: It seems like the approach to gambling is changing, on a federal level. The government is in the process of legalizing games of chance for a few years now. No set date yet.5
Online gambling is not specifically regulated, but the general ban applies to internet gambling activities as well, which are technically illegal. Despite this, Brazilian players who play online are not prosecuted. Only illegally operating domestic companies are penalized. Offshore online gambling companies are outside of the jurisdiction of Brazil, and the country’s gambling laws don’t apply to them.

Casino gambling has been specifically illegal in Brazil since 1946 (gambling has been illegal since 1941, but the casinos, which already existed were allowed to stay in operation for 5 years afterwards, Brazil is a federal republic, where the 27 states have a great degree of autonomy).
Prior to the ban, the country had a burgeoning casino industry in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais as its focal points. However, all casino licenses were revoked, and casino gambling, which had been exempt from the Criminal Contravention Act, was completely banned, and remain banned ever since.
There are no land-based casinos in Brazil. UPDATE 2021: However, the government is expected to legalize casinos in a few years, no set date yet.
The regulations regarding slot machines is not as simple. Originally considered to be banned under the Criminal Contravention Act, slot machines halls were allowed to operate in certain provinces in the 90s along with bingo, according to Zico law, or Decree 981*. Then, slot machines and bingo were banned again in 2004, after a huge scandal broke out over government officials extorting bribes from gambling houses to allow them to stay in operation. Slot machines and bingo halls were made specifically illegal, which closed this loophole.
There are no slot parlour or electronic casinos in operation since 2004.
Online casino gambling may also be considered illegal in accordance with the Criminal Contravention Act’s complete ban on gambling. However, this is not entirely clear (explanation is above, at the top of the page). What is certain is that Brazilian citizens playing on international casino sites are not prosecuted. The government considers these websites illegal, but because they operate from outside of the country’s jurisdiction, Brazilian laws do not apply to them. The government blocks some of them, but that’s about it, no further actions were taken, and most are easily accessible (if any of the online gambling websites are not accessible from Brazil, please drop a comment).
A bill to prevent citizens from playing on foreign online gambling sites, by banning payments (as in the USA) was considered, but has not passed since 2014, due to legal issues (in fact, I haven’t heard anything about it in the past 5 years).
