Poker is considered a table game in Barbados, and as such, it is specifically prohibited under Barbadian laws. However, horse racing betting is legal at the island’s only horse racecourse Garrison Savannah, and at licensed off-course betting points.

Horse racing betting is seen as the upscale form of gambling, where the “refined”, elegant, rich people go, whereas the slot halls are where the stupid, undereducated poor people go. The horse racing track even has a strict dress code.

The Garrison Savannah is operated by the Barbados Turf Club, and since 2020, it has an online platform that allows online betting.* This is the only legal form of online gambling in Barbados currently. The gambling law Betting and Gaming Act 1985 predates the internet and makes no mention of online betting anywhere. However, it also does not directly bans it. There is no information about this online, but one thing is certain, horse racing is a dying sport, and betting on them is also a dying business, shrinking every year, racecourse struggling to stay open, this is true worldwide, and true for Barbados Turf Club as well. They have been know to have financial issues since, at the very least, 2010.** And I suspect this exemption, special allowance was made to help their solvency (no info on this anywhere online). One thing is for certain, private businesses still can not get online gambling licenses, this is the only exception.
