Gambling in Suriname

Suriname, officially known as the Republic of Suriname is a sovereign state on the northeastern Atlantic coast of South America. It’s bordered by French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west and Brazil to the south. With just under 165,000 square km territory and a population of 573,311 (2014 estimate) it is the smallest country in South America. Most of it’s population lives on the country’s north coast, in and around the capital and largest city, Paramaribo. Suriname is a Dutch speaking ex-colony that only gained independence from the Netherlands in 1975. Under dutch colonial supervision it was called Dutch Guiana.

Land based gambling in Suriname is legal and regulated. Casino licenses were first granted by the national government in 1996. In 2009, it was reported that there were nine major casinos in the country*, all located in and around the capital, Paramaribo. There were substantially more of such venues between the country’s borders, but in 2004 the government clamped down on the casino industry, due to alleged money laundering issues. Land based bingo halls are also operating in the country inside some major casinos. There are also lotteries and sports betting games in Suriname provided by the company Suribet, which is the Surinamese subsidiary of Superbet, a company operating online and offline gambling in Uganda, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago as well.

The land based casino market is well-regulated and online operators are eligible for a license as well. However, there is no indication of any Surinamese online gambling site, apart from Pasha Global and Suribet, which also operates the national lottery.

My research did not indicate that any laws criminalising gambling on foreign online platforms would exist in the country, so it’s safe to assume that Surinamese players are free to play on international gambling sites that accept them.

Casino gambling in Suriname

Online casino gambling in Suriname: legal on licensed platforms, players of foreign sites are not prosecuted

Land based casino gambling is legal and regulated in Suriname. In 1996, the first three casino licenses were issued to three hotel companies, all located in or in the vicinity of Paramaribo*. After that casinos started to pop-up all over the country, until eventually many of them were shut down by the government in 2004, leaving only 4 in operation – according to unofficial sources. Since then their numbers started to increase again, although more gradually. As of 2009, there were 9 operational land based casinos in the country.

Suriname currently licenses one online casino provided by Pasha Global, which runs land based casinos in the country as well. Surinamese players can play slots and other classic online casino games on their website with a Suribet ID and they can also take part in sports betting games on the site.

There are no sources that would indicate that Surinamese players are prosecuted for gambling online on foreign platforms, nor is there any kind of internet censoring system in place in the country.

Bingo in Suriname

Online bingo in Suriname: no legal online platform, players of foreign sites are not prosecuted

Land based bingo is legal and licensed in the country and many of the Surinamese casinos have bingo halls.

There isn’t seem to be a legal and licensed online bingo site in the country. However, it’s safe to assume that Surinamese players who frequent foreign online bingo sites are not prosecuted or penalised in any way.

Poker in Suriname

Online poker in Suriname: no legal online platform, players of foreign sites are not prosecuted

Land based poker in Suriname is legal inside licensed and legally operated brick and mortar casinos.

Although, the only legal and licensed online platforms seem to be Suribet and Pasha Global, they do not offer poker games on their sites. However, it is extremely unlikely that a Surinamese player playing online poker on a foreign platform from the safety of his home would be prosecuted or penalised in any way.

Sports betting in Suriname

Online sports betting in Suriname: legal on Suribet, players of foreign sites are not prosecuted either

The company Suribet was founded in 2010. At first it only offered sports betting to players online and in three betting shops in the capital Paramaribo. Riding the waves of its initial success, it later introduced scratch card games, a lottery and online casino games in conjunction with Pasha Global, a land based and online casino operator company that runs gambling venues in Suriname, Uganda and other countries as well.

Although Suribet seem to be in a monopolistic position as a provider of legal sports betting, players of unlicensed foreign platforms are not prosecuted in the country.

Lottery in Suriname

Surinamese players can buy lottery tickets in Suribet’s land based shops around the country and they can also play the game on the company’s website.

Players of foreign online lotteries are not prosecuted in the country either.

Bitcoin gambling in Suriname

Bitcoin gambling in Suriname: unknown / undetermined, safe to assume that players are not prosecuted

There are almost no country in the world with specific regulations regarding Bitcoin gambling. According to my research on many country’s gambling rules around the world, the pattern that emerges is that the overall stance of the government on gambling and cryptocurrencies determine Bitcoin gambling’s legality in each country.

Surinamese authorities do not specifically ban Bitcoin, nor do they seem to restrict access to unlicensed foreign online gambling platforms or prosecute players for playing on one of these. Therefore – given the anonymous nature of digital currencies – it’s safe to assume, that individual players who gamble on foreign Bitcoin gambling sites are not prosecuted by the authorities in Suriname.

Online gambling websites accepting players from Suriname

Although the number of legal online gambling sites in Suriname are limited to only two providers, players of foreign online gambling sites are not prosecuted in the country and many of the major international platforms accept registrations from the county.

The following online casinos accept players from Suriname.
