The Sultanate of Oman is located in the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The nation is sharing borders with the United Arab Emirates to the northwest, Saudi Arabia to the west, Yemen to the southwest, and shares marine borders with Iran and Pakistan.

The country’s official religion is Islam, and under Islamic law, gambling is forbidden like alcohol or eating pork. The main reason behind it is that the religion sees gambling as a form of addiction, taking away the people’s attention from their duties. Because of these regulations, there are no land based casinos or sports betting facilities in the country. There are illegal gambling dens in Oman of course, but it’s ill-advised to participate in them because the law is enforced heavily in the Sultanate of Oman.

The country is a popular tourist destination. If you decide to visit Oman, prepare that there won’t be any gambling. Like in many Arabic countries, gambling is illegal in Oman too because of aforementioned religious reasons. The country’s official religion is Islam, and under Islamic law, gambling is forbidden like alcohol or eating pork.

However, competitive sports and races like football, basketball, camel races and bull fights are very popular among the populace, but no one is allowed to make wagers on the outcomes of these games. Online gambling is forbidden too, but not as strictly enforced as in case of brick and mortar gambling.

The Omani government censors websites with anti-political, anti-religious, and pornographic content, and partially blocks gambling related content. Players from Oman who places bets on foreign websites are not prosecuted, though.

Casino gambling in Oman

Online casino gambling in Oman: illegal, but not prosecuted

Because of the Islamic religion of Oman, land based casinos are strictly forbidden in the country. However, if players make bets on foreign websites, they won’t be prosecuted. Players won’t get prosecuted if they play in a casino in a foreign country either, like the famous Omani politician’s wife, who lost £2 million at the Ritz casino in Great Britain. Nora Al-Daher later sued the casino saying it took advantage of her gambling addiction*. (However, the court later ruled in favour of the casino. Since then, the woman in question lost another $1 million in the US.)

Bingo is one of the more popular games in the world, but not in the Arabic countries, though. Therefore, in Oman, there are no bingo halls at all where the Omani citizens could play. The reason behind it is that it doesn’t matter if it’s popular or not, bingo is still gambling, so the Islamic law forbids it.

However, online bingo websites still accept players from Oman.

Poker in Oman

Online poker in Oman: illegal, but not prosecuted

Many countries consider Poker as a sport, a competitive game of knowledge and skill. However, in Oman, poker is still considered a casino game and gambling laws apply to poker as well. Poker is forbidden in Oman like any other forms of gambling. However, on websites hosted in other (if they are not blocked by the Omani government) countries, players from Oman can play poker online without the risk of getting prosecuted.

Sports betting in Oman

Online sports betting in Oman: illegal, but not prosecuted

Competitive sports and races are very popular in Oman, especially football, basketball, camel races, and bull fights. The races often give prizes for the winners, but betting on the outcome of those races are highly forbidden. Therefore, there aren’t any land – or online sports betting facilities or bookmaker offices in the country because it is a common form of gambling. If a player from Oman wants to bet on sports, they can do so on a foreign website if it is, at that time, accessible from Oman.

Lottery in Oman

The lottery is forbidden in Oman too. The closest things to the lottery in Oman are the prize bonds. Banks or shopping malls can include raffles in their marketing campaigns, and they can give away prizes like cars, gift cards, or even money. E.g: in 2013 Bank Muscat required clients to maintain an average balance of 1000 rials on their account for a chance to win the jackpot (1,000,000 rials)*. This is not considered a form of gambling in the Sultanate of Oman.

Bitcoin gambling in Oman

Bitcoin gambling in Oman: illegal, players are not prosecuted

Bitcoin is a virtual currency invented by Satoshi Nakamoto. Many countries have different rules and regulations for the purchase and use of bitcoins. In Oman, you can purchase and use bitcoins, but gambling with it is still ill-advised. Bitcoin gambling is not the most popular, or well-known form of gambling out there, but it exists. So bitcoin gambling, because it’s a form of gambling, is forbidden in the Sultanate of Oman like other forms of gambling. However, Bitcoin gambling is not currently prosecuted.
