Guide to Gambling in Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe is an insular region of France located in the Leeward Islands, part of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. It is an overseas region of France consisting of one single overseas department. Guadeloupe’s population is around 400,000. The territory’s capital is Basse-Terre (with around 12,000 residents) located on the island of the same name. Like other overseas departments, Guadeloupe is an integral part of France thus part of the European Union. Therefore, the region’s currency is the Euro. However, (due to it being an overseas territory) Guadeloupe is not part of the Schengen Area.

Christopher Columbus was the first European to visit the island of Guadeloupe during his second voyage in 1493. The island wasn’t colonized until the late 17th century, though. It was annexed to the kingdom of France in 1674. The British captured the island in 1759 but gave it back to France at the end of the Seven Years War because they thought Canada is more important strategically. However, the British took control of the island in 1794 again, but they got repelled in the same year. The British captured the territory for the final time in the early 19th century, however, the island became an official French territory after the signing of the Treaty of Vienna in 1815.

Because Guadeloupe is a French territory, the French gambling laws apply. Therefore, gambling is legal and regulated by the government. The region has only 2 operating casinos at the moment but they offer the most popular casino games players usually look for like poker, roulette, or blackjack to name a few. Online gambling is regulated as well. Operators for both land-based and online gambling have to acquire proper licenses, though. Unlicensed gambling establishments are fined heavily and the ISPs often block unlicensed foreign gambling websites.

Bitcoin is a digital currency often referred to as a “cryptocurrency” invented by an unknown person under the name of Satoshi Nakamoto 2008. It has grown in popularity significantly the following years as an alternative mean of payment. Bitcoin gambling appeared shortly after the introduction of the currency and continues to gain popularity as more and more online casino started to specialize in it. However, Bitcoin is still a relatively new phenomenon son only just a handful of countries issued laws concerning it. Some countries see Bitcoin as an asset rather than a currency (like Norway or Lithuania for example).
