Guide to Gambling in Gambia

Gambia (sometimes called The Gambia), officially the Republic of Gambia is a country in West Africa. It is the smallest country in mainland Africa as it is mostly surrounded by Senegal. Gambia has a small coastline along the Atlantic Ocean at its western end. Gambia got its name from the Gambia River which runs through in the middle of the country. Gambia’s population is around 2 million. The country’s capital city is Banjul while the largest one is Serekunda with approximately 340,000 residents. Gambia’s official language is English. Gambia’s economy is dominated by farming, fishing, and especially tourism. Gambia is an ethnically diverse country with the dominant ethnic group being Mandinka as it takes up 42% of the population. About a third of the population lives below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day making Gambia one of the poorest countries in the world.

Gambia’s early history was characterized by the slave trade of the colonial powers. First the Portuguese took control of the territory and later the country was made part of the British colony in 1795 when the government formally assumed control, establishing the Province of Senegambia. Gambia gained independence from the British in 1965 and operates as a dominant-party presidential republic ever since. The current leader, Yahya Jammeh seized power in a coup as a young army officer in 1994. The previous leader, Dawda Jawara ruled the country for almost 25 years.

Gambling in Gambia was made completely illegal in march 2015 by the Gambian government. Therefore, all casinos, bookmakers, and lottery providers had to close its doors. So there aren’t any land-based establishments offering the most popular games like roulette, poker, blackjack, or sports betting amongst others. Before the ban, gambling was only legal within the Enterprise Zone of Gambia. Online gambling became illegal too but there is little to no information whether players are prosecuted for playing at an offshore online casino or not.*

Bitcoin gambling appeared shortly after the introduction of the currency and continues to grow in popularity as more and more online casinos started to specialize in it.
