Kratom, Mitragyna speciosa (also known as ketum or kratum) is an evergreen tree from the same family as the coffee plant (see picture below).

Its leaves are used for medicinal properties and it is also psychoactive.
In fact, kratom is the second most popular legal drug (after Salvia divinorum),

According to users, the effects of kratom are similar to Morphine and opiates.

To increase the intensity and the psychoactive properties of the plant kratom standardized extract and kratom resin extracts have been developed (not recommended for first time users, more info below).

Although using Kratom has been common throughout it’s native range of Southeast Asia, this amazing plant has remained virtually unknown outside of that area until around 2008.

The leaves are chewed to uplift mood and to treat health problems.

Effects of Kratom:

Kratom behaves as a μ-opioid receptor agonist like morphine. Kratom is used in the management of chronic pain, as well as recreationally.
However, its effects  and the mechanism of action differ somewhat from traditional opiates such as morphine and therefore rapid onset of tolerance and dependence – characteristics  of opiates – are not present.

Interesting facts about Kratom: Kratom was banned in Thailand when opium was still legal, because it was reducing the country’s tax revenue from opium (it has remained a controlled substance ever since).

Buy Kratom online

You can buy kratom leaves, quality prepared kratom, kratom extracts and kratom capsule safely at the following trusted sellers.

Kratom comes in three forms of varying potency.

Diferent kratom product types:

Kratom leaves: the least expensive and the mildest kratom product. These are dried, shredded and bagged kratom leaves. Kratom leaves are a good choice for first time users.

Kratom standardized extract:  these are the freshest kratom leaves selected and tested to contain more active ingredients than standard, cheaper kratom products (, which contain some stems, older leaves etc…).

They are stronger and more expensive than the regular kratom preparation.

Kratom resin extract: Kratom resin is produced by boiling down kratom leaves until a thick, sticky substance remains.

Kratom resin usually contain 30x – 50x more of the active ingredient than kratom leaves. kratom resin is the strongest kratom product on the market.

Buy kratom US

IMPORTANT: the FDA put an import alert on kratom and salvia, which means that large commercial orders can be seized by the customs and vendors can be prosecuted (notable example is Bouncingbearbotanicals, owner was jailed and it no longer sells kratom or salvia).

Vendors selling kratom in the US are operating in a legal gray area. And many kratom vendors cut corners and try to rip people off.

You can find a list of these vendors in legal high shop blacklist.

Please be very careful if you decide to purchase kratom from a US vendor (I do not advise it).

I can’t recommend any US kratom vendors right now.

Kratom’s legal status in USA

Kratom is largely legal in the USA, even though customs have seized commercial orders.

Even though kratom is legal in most states of the US authorities tend to liberally interpret the federal  import alert and prosecute any legal high shop they want. But this does not affect the private consumers.

Kratom – active ingredients

This is a picture of the chemical composition of mitragynine one of the 25 identified alkaloids responsible for the effects of kratom. The chemical formula of mitragynine is (E)-2-[(2S,3S)-3-ethyl-8-methoxy-1,2,3,4,6,7,12,12b- octahydroindolo[3,2-h]quinolizin-2-yl]-3- methoxyprop-2-enoic acid methyl ester.
Mitragynine
There are about 25 alkaloids that have been identified in kratom, including mitragynine, which is believed to be the responsible for most of the plants narcotic effect.

It is still unknown as to how the other alkaloids affect humans.

Kratom effects

By affecting the  delta opioid receptors – much like opiates do – kratom provides a calm and relaxing euphoria mirroring that of opiates.

However, the effects of kratom are both relaxing and stimulating at the same time, with lower doses the stimulating characteristics prevail and with higher doses the relaxing and intoxicating effects kick in.

Just like opiates a tolerance develops quickly (cross-tolerance with other opiates is also possible). Kratom users need to increase their dosage after the few first times to achieve the same effects.

Kratom appears to affect the brain in much the same way opiates do, but yet it does not cause the dependence caused by regular opiate use.

Tolerance usually disappears in a few weeks but will take less time to develop again if regular consumption is resumed.

Kratom preparation, methods of consumption

There are many ways to consume kratom, but the most common method – outside of Asia – is by putting dried kratom leaves in boiling water, straining, and drinking the resulting tea.
The resulting liquid can be boiled down to produce extract (kratom resin), which can be stored for longer periods of time.

Kratom resin extract can be swallowed (tastes very unpleasant) without any further preparation.

In Thailand, kratom leaves are often chewed fresh (usually after removing the stringy central vein).

Dried leaves can also be chewed, but since they are a bit tough, most people prefer to crush them up or powder them so that they can be swallowed (kratom pills).

Powdered kratom can be mixed with fruit juice or apple sauce. This partially masks the taste and allows it to be quickly swallowed.

Kratom can be smoked, but doing so has no aadvantage over chewing or making a tea from it. Not to mention, the amount of leaves you would need to smoke is very high (see below).

Kratom dosage

According to various user trip reports and legal high vendors you can expect the following effects from the following doses of kratom.

/The following doses are for shredded leaves. Standardized extracts and kratom resin are of course stronger./

  • 0-2 grams of kratom = mild effects (typically the effects are stimulant-like)
  • 2-5 grams of kratom = medium strength effects (the effects can be stimulant-like or sedative-euphoric-analgesic)
  • 5-10 grams of kratom = strong effects (sedative-euphoric-analgesic effects; too strong for highly sensitive people)
  • 10+ grams of kratom = very strong effects (sedative-euphoric-analgesic effects; TOO STRONG FOR MOST PEOPLE)

 Dangers of Kratom

It is recommended that users do not use kratom more than twice a week.

Overdosing is possible and can lead to hospitalization (no reported deaths so far)

Kratom can induce panic attacks in people who are susceptible to panic attacks.

Tolerance develops quickly, and although physical dependence has not been observed, psychological dependence can be a problem (opiate-like euphoria is very addictive).

Health benefits of Kratom

Kratom is a very effective pain medication and it is sometimes prescribed by doctors in countries, in which it is legal.

Many of the alkaloids found in kratom are thought to have a beneficial effect on the immune system.
The most powerful one is probably epicatechin, an antioxidant also found in dark chocolate and closely related to the EGCG  (EGCG gives green tea its beneficial effects).

Kratom trip reports

The following are trip reports of ordinary people, who took kratom:

I’ve done Kratom several times before, but this time was special, I fasted for 18 hours prior, my last meal was around 9PM the previous evening. The day of, I went for a 2 1/2 mile run followed by yoga and meditation. I thought around 3PM would be a good time to ingest the Kratom.

3:15 ~ I weighed out 7 grams and emptied the powdered contents into my mouth chasing it with a tall glass of water. It tastes nasty, but I know the reward will be sweet.

3:45 ~ I start to feel this intense warmth come over my entire body, it feels like a combination of my first MDMA high with a nice OxyContin like twist, along with the social aspect of Cocaine.

4:15 ~ Still feeling incredible, strong desire to communicate with loved ones. Very empathetic.

4:45 ~ Listening to music sounds like a really good idea right now. I put on a live Jerry Garcia Band disc from 77′ and just lay on my bed really enjoying the moment.

6:15 ~ Starting to feel back to normal, I still very happy though.

Overall this experience was incredibly satisfying.”

11:47-12:34- I drank my Kratom tea and experienced a strange numbness in my tongue when I pressed it against the roof of my mouth. This is a good sign to me. I drank it a little too fast to start off with and as I stared at the floor I experienced minor visual hallucinations (the floor moved and waved).

12:34-2:20- Between these hours I experienced the most fantastic high I have experienced. It is similar to an orgasm crossed with a MJ high. Shivers of warmth ran down my whole body and my fingers and other extremities went totally numb. I found myself playing a game in which I sat still in silence just experiencing these feelings. Any movement brought pleasant, warm tingling sensations all over my body although especially noticeable around the head and neck area.

Altogether it was a pleasent trip. Kratom still remains my favourite legal drug.”

    1. Please reread this part: https://simonsblogpark.com/legalhigh/simons-kratom-guide/#buy_kratom_us

and also this part: https://simonsblogpark.com/legalhigh/simons-kratom-guide/#kratom_legal_status .

Also, I’m not saying Kratom is illegal in every state.
But it is indeed controlled in three states + there is an import ban on bigger orders, bigger orders not for personal use.

You will find the sources under the table titled “Kratom- legal status – USA”.
/And if you need even more proof the sources listed contain links to government sites, where you can read the official legal documents. I must warn you that they are notoriously ambivalent and not easy to understand./

I hope this helps. If you have further specific questions (e.g.: Is Kratom legal in x country/state?), then don’t hesitate to ask. I will do my best to answer your questions.

      Happy holidays!

  1. Its an Import ALERT. Not a ban

    1. “import alert” is a technical term. It means commercial orders over a certain size (not specified by the law, they specify it as bigger than smaller private orders, very ambiguous) entering the country are seized by the customs.
Smaller orders for private consumption (exact quantity is not defined, agian law is very ambiguous) however are very fine. Check the link in the comment above this for details.

  2. George Baron says:

    Hi Simon.
Can the Kratom resin be dissolved in 90% alcohol and be used as a tincture?
If so. What do you think each drop (pipette) would be the equivalent strength of the normal powder?

    1. Kratom resin completely dissolves in hot water (with some stirring). However, I’ve never tried it with alcohol. I suppose given enough time and stirring/shaking the bottle probably it should.
The problem is that you can’t heat alcohol as much as water, because the evaporation point is lower (+ your whole house would smell like alcohol for days). So you would have to wait much longer.

    2. Also, keep in mind, that if you dissolve Kratom resin in water – and you are boiling it for extended periods of time – you will probably destroy some of the alkaloids.

  3. I’m a customs broker. There is no “seizing” on large orders of Kratom. The FDA issued an import advisory that customs can detain shipments of Kratom without inspection until it is determined that the importer is not recommending or selling the Kratom for human consumption. Essentially the vendors are checked that they are not marketing Kratom as a supplement. This delays a shipment but shipments are released once it is determined the product isn’t marketed as a supplement for human consumption. CBP has NO authority to do anything beyond delaying a shipment of Kratom that is not marketed as treating, diagnosing a disease etc. If you google Kratom Import Advisory there is a short list of Kratom importers that will have their shipments seized because how they market it. Most US suppliers make note that their product is for research or incense and not for consumption. These vendors can all legally import and sell Kratom. Shipments are being released through customs because Kratom is still legal in the US and the DEA currently only classifies it as a drug of concern.

    1. Hi,

Thank you! Detailed comments from actual experts are always welcome.
I just finished reading your comments and I will definitely go trough this again in light of what you have said.

I’m not a customs broker, so it is entirely possible, that I have misread something.

I’m really busy right now with work, but ASAP, when I will have time – after researching the topic again – I will update the website.

I would like to add just one little thing: Kratom is definitely not legal in Indiana,Tennessee and Louisiana.

You can find out why here:

      Kratom Indiana: http://www.in.gov/attorneygeneral/2974.htm ,
      Kratom Tennessee: http://state.tn.us/sos/acts/108/pub/pc0161.pdf ,
      Kratom Louisiana: http://legiscan.com/LA/text/HB19/id/918195 .

But apart from this I will definitely take a look at this import “ban” again.
I appreciated your comment. Thank you.

    1. I’m definitely checking this out. Nobody wants to know the truth about this more than I do. And accurate information about import concerns are not that easy to come by.

      Thanks!

  4. Sorry to keep harping on this but I want correct info out there. An import alert is not a technical term for shipments over a certain size. An import alert is issued when an OGA (other government agencies) makes an alert to Customs Border Patrol regarding a concern on any import category the particular agency oversees. It can be an alert to watch for certain invasive insects coming from a region in bananas, counterfeit rolex watches or in this case importing an unapproved supplement. Kratom is only considered a supplement or banned if a company markets or promotes an item for human consumption. The FDA cannot make nitrous oxide in whipped cream banned but it can ban a company from recommending inhaling the gas as they control products for human consumption.

One final note, the way online vendors of Kratom are getting there products into the US (and they are) is by hiring customs brokers such as myself that are knowledgeable in the laws, duties and tariffs for imported products as well as the required documentation. We are not importing cocaine hidden is gas tanks, we are importing a legal product for research and incense. I had a large shipment of Katom release from customs this week and CBP was fully aware of the shipment. It was a legal import and was released into the commerce of the US. If a final user determines to use a product in a manner inconsistent with it’s label that is not the fault of a company that legally imports it for a legal use.

    1. Thanks. I will definitely take a look.

Obviously I can not take online comments at face value (hope you understand, lot of spammers, link droppers, trolls, people who don’t have a clue of what they are talking about etc…).

I will research this topic and update the website accordingly ASAP. Thanks.

    2. Once again, thanks for letting me know. I rewrote the guide and incorporated the information you have provided me with.

    3. Josh, can you contact me please? Reply with your contact info. I had a couple questions for you with your expertise. Thanks

  5. Hi Stacy,
Please please list your contact info. I do not wish to publish mine on an online forum but I will get in touch with you. You could set up a new email just for this purpose.

    Josh

  6. mr simon. i need your consultation on ketum because i was recentlly caught by police. during the past 58 years i have never been caught or charged for any drug related case. do you know of any doctor who can check my body system

    1. Where are you? Is kratom legal in your country or not regulated? BIG DIFFERENCE! Without this I can not help you.

  7. Nice site, but I notice you’re recommended dosage amounts for Kratom are extremely high and should be modified to avoid morons from starting out at those levels and getting very sick.

You claim 7-15 grams as being a recommended dosage for moderate effects. That’s a crazy suggestion. Just 2-3 grams is plenty for most people starting out. I’ve seen folks vomit from just 3 grams.

Sure, that low potency head shop crap may require 15 grams, but any quality Kratom will do the job in much lower dosages. I think it’s this irresponsible use and information that causes people to get sick, which in turn gives herbs a bad name. When used responsibly and in the proper amounts, Kratom is a wonderful herb that can offer real help to people in pain.

      1. I appreciate that Simon. Your website does offer some great info though, so I do appreciate that. I just thought the dosage amounts were a bit high. I can see some teenagers looking to get “high” ingesting 25 grams of Kratom and end up getting very sick (especially if they combine with other stuff). Every time this happens, it’s another possible news story for the feds to pick up on, and use against illegalization. Like anything when taken in excess, Kratom can cause sickness, though when taken at proper dosages it has tremendous potential for getting folks off of prescription pain meds. It has helped me with my chronic back pain.

        1. Thanks. I will research this more, in the meantime I adjusted the dosage recommendations. I certainly never take more than 1 gram of extract (I usually take extract, 5x or 10x), but then again I play it safe, very safe. Kratom is indeed a fantastic, still legal (god knows for how long…) entheogen.

          1. Amy L Brimer says:

I would still love to kno any online stores selling Kratom in the US. AND if it’s impossible to obtain it in a capsule to just swallow?? My hubs and 16 yr old daughter will think I’m up to no good if I start trying to do much of anything otherwise. Or another legal herbal blend, that comes in a capsule form that will produce an euphoria similar to Rx grade opium? I’ve never gotten to try Kratom, but the description I always read is “stimulating in low dosages & sedation in higher doses”, that a great way to describe the euphoria I’m seeking.
Thanks to any help or advise in advance!!
Or that will ship into USA.
            Thanks,
            Amy

          2. Hi,

I’m sorry, but as of today kratom is a Schedule I. substance for 2 years. US shops stopped selling it and to the best o my knowledge no reliable legal high shops deliver to the US anymore.
