There’s an episode of South Park when one of the characters neglected to read the full terms and conditions of his iTunes user agreement before he clicked the accept button.
Unknown to him, he had agreed to let the folks at Apple subject him to bizarre medical experiments, which was in the fine print of the terms and conditions (remember- it’s a cartoon).
While the show satirizes the strange and banal things that we might encounter in day-to-day life, it actually makes a valid point in this particular episode.
How often do we read the terms and conditions of any kind of agreement that we sign up for?
It’s an extremely good idea to do so, even though most of the time we click on accept or sign the agreement that signifies we accept the full terms and conditions of the agreement.
This is also true when we become a member of an online gaming site, and often buried in the fine print is the stipulation that we accept their withdrawal terms when it comes to any kind of bonus obtained.
These bonuses are usually covered by a play through or wagering limitation- and this is something that is always weighted in the casinos favor. If you are panning on “casino whoring” it is essential to read fine print and fully understand play-trough and wagering requirements.
What exactly are wagering and playtrough requirements
Simply put wagering\playthrough requirement is the amount of times the your deposit+the sum of the bonus needs to be wagered before it can be cashed.
Usually it is around 20 – 30x depending on the casino and the promotion.
The three biggest forms of bonuses are match bonus, no-deposit bonus and welcome bonus. Let’s see the wagering requirement in action using three examples from the main bonus types.
Example, match bonus
You have a 100% $ 300 first deposit match bonus. This has a 30x playthrough requirement.
You have deposited $ 300 and now you have $ 600 to play with.
Before you can with draw you must place a total of 30 (wagering requirement) x ($ 300 [deposited amount]+ $ 300 [bonus amount]) , that’s a grand total of $ 18000 worth of bets before you can withdraw your winnings.
That’s a lot! It takes about 3 hours to wager that amount.
Example, no deposit bonus
You get $ 7 to play after you have registered as a no deposit bonus. This has a wagering requirement of 20x BUT that needs to be wagered by a minimum deposit of $ 20 + the sum of the bonus.
So that would be ($ 7 [free bonus] + $ 20 [minimum deposit you must make before you can withdraw at all]) x 20 (wagering requirement) , that’s $ 540. As you can see it is significantly better than the match bonus used at our previous example.
This is whyit is important to understand bonus jargon and to be able to compare and understand bonuses.
Example, deposit bonus or welcome bonus
You get a bonus of $ 25 welcome bonus on you first deposit if it’s over $ 100 but it has a playtrough requirement of 32x.
So you have to wager ($25 + $ 100) x 32 = $4000
From the three bonus examples the second one (no deposit bonus) is clearly the best.
As a thumbs rule the less wagering requirement the better.
It gets even more complicated because different casino games count differently towards the wagering requirement. Or even not at all!
Usually slots are favored and classic casino games are discouraged.
You’ll find that games like Roulette and Blackjack will count less towards wagering requirement, if they count at all.
The numbers vary from casino to casino but in general, Keno counts 100%, Roulette,
Sic Bo and Pai Gow 50% and Blackjack and Punto Banco / Baccarat 10%.
So if, for example, you wish to play just Sic Bo, your wagering / playthrough requirement on the $ 300 match bonus from our example with the 20x wagering requirement would be $ 36000 ((30 (wagering requirement) x ($ 300 [deposited amount]+ $ 300 [bonus amount] )) x 2 (because Sic Bo only counts as 50%)
If you wish to play only Blackjack, then it’s $ 180 000 ! You better clear your calendar for that day (or for the whole week…) if you are planning on playing only Blackjack with this bonus.
The size of the bonus
The amount of the bonus promotion varies greatly between different casino websites, and so remember that the higher the bonus amount, the more you will need to bet before you’re permitted to withdraw the bonus. So instead always read the terms and conditions of the bonuses carefully and look for the wagering and other requirements.
